Setup
To have the network up and running, you will have to correctly setup the network. For this peer to peer network, we will need the following items.
S/N | Item | Description |
---|---|---|
1 | Laptop 1 | Windows 7 |
2 | Laptop 2 | Windows 8 |
3 | 1 Cable | Crossover |
4 | Cable Tester | For Testing |
The needed items
Use the cable tester to confirm that the cable is configured as a crossover, and that continuity is good.
One end of the crossover cable will be connected to the laptop's NIC through the RJ-45 port. The other end of the cable will be connected in like manner on the second system.
Once the connection is made, some ports might start blinking while the network icon on the system tray will indicate a connection.
If the Network icon on the system tray should have an X, it is a sign that there is a serious problem that might stop the network from working. It might be a software or Configuration problem. You may try solving the problem through device manager.
Congratulation
Configuring a network on windows 7, 8 and 10 is relatively easy as most processes are plug and play. Configuring Network starter getting easy with the introduction of windows 2000 and subsequent versions of windows made the task even lighter.
On windows 7, 8 and 10. The network almost automatically gets configured, at some instances they seem to be over configured that you may have to relax some securities before the system can communicate. This may come in the form of a firewall or a password protection that might have to be eased.
File Transfer
The Configuration here makes it possible for the other system to have access to only a limited portion of the Networked system, such accessible areas are said to be shared items or public items. The other computer is not allowed access to other parts of the computer.
So to move a file from system one to system two, you will have to to take the file to a specific shared folder like shared document in system one. Then on system two you will have to navigate to the shared document folder where you will find the file and copy it out. The system who dropped the file in the shared location often has more authority over the shared file.

Conclusion
After having gone through the introductions the materials and tools needed, configuring and crimping a desired cable and finally setting up and transferring files in a peer to peer Network involving two systems. The quotation arising is what happens when more than two Computer systems are required? Or is a peer-to-peer network limited to only two computers? Answers to this will be provided in subsequent posts.
