The Different Generation's of Computers
The first generation of computers, known as the mainframe computers, were created in the 1940s. These machines had a slower processing speed and less power than modern day models, but they allowed for more errors to be corrected without losing data. In 1949 one of these computers was used to calculate that there were about 400 billion stars in the Milky Way Galaxy!
The next generation of computer came along in 1971 with what is now called a minicomputer. It had much better processing speeds and memory capacity than its predecessors; it could do 1 million instructions per second (1 MIPS) vs 100 thousand instructions per second (100 KIPS). It also used magnetic media instead of paper tape or punch cards like previous generations which made it cheaper to operate and maintain.

In 1981 the first home computer was introduced, this is known as the third generation of computing and it had a huge impact on our world. It revolutionized the way we live and work; homes became digital information hubs with calculators, address books, diaries and even games! When people saw what these devices could do they became popular very quickly.
In the early 1990s, IBM introduced its first laptop computer! This was a huge step forward in laptops becoming more common and affordable. They were expensive to begin with but they gradually became smaller and cheaper as technology progressed. In 1994 Apple launched its iMac which took it's place as one of the most successful computers ever made. It had a bright colorful design that was unlike anything on the market at that time, and it quickly became one of the best selling computers ever!

In 2009 Apple launched its first smartphone; The iPhone . This opened up an entirely new market for smartphones as this device was stylish, easy to use and affordable (relatively speaking). It has since become one of the most popular gadgets in the world!
