MasterCard was originally called Master Charge. It was founded in 1966 as a joint venture between several banks and regional bankcard associations in response to the BankAmericard (now Visa) issued by Bank of America.

In 1979, the company changed its name to MasterCard. The name change was part of a rebranding effort to unify the company's image and to make it more competitive in the international market.

MasterCard is now one of the largest payment processing companies in the world. It has over 2.5 billion cards in circulation and is accepted in over 210 countries and territories.
