Did you know the hydrochloric acid found in your stomach is strong enough to dissolve a nail

The hydrochloric acid in your stomach, while certainly an acid, isn't strong enough to dissolve a nail.

Here's why:

  • Stomach acid is diluted. It's produced at a specific concentration that works well for digestion, but it's not strong enough to dissolve metals.
  • Stomach has protective lining. Your stomach lining produces mucus that acts as a barrier, protecting it from the acid's effects.
  • Nails are pretty tough. Nails are made of keratin, a strong protein that resists many chemicals.

Stomach acid is definitely powerful stuff and can irritate or damage the esophagus if it flows up there (heartburn!), but it's not designed to dissolve metal.
