While folding a regular piece of paper more than 7 times gets very difficult, it's not technically impossible. There are two main reasons why it's hard to fold paper many times:
- Exponential Growth: With each fold, the number of layers doubles. So, after the 6th fold, you'd be trying to fold 64 layers of paper! This becomes very thick and difficult to manage.
- Paper Properties: Paper fibers themselves aren't infinitely flexible. After a certain number of folds, they become stressed and resist further bending.
However, the 7-fold limit is for a typical piece of paper. Here are some ways people have exceeded it:
- Larger, Thinner Paper: In 2002, a high school student folded a 1.2km long roll of toilet paper 12 times!
- Mathematical Calculations: A formula can be used to consider paper thickness and length to predict the maximum folds possible.
So, while folding a regular piece of paper many times is challenging, it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility with the right approach!
