African elephants have four teeth: two tusks and two molars on each side of their jaw. They use their tusks to dig for food, strip bark from trees, and defend themselves from predators.
African elephants are the largest land mammals on Earth, and their tusks can grow to be over 10 feet long and weigh over 200 pounds! Tusks are actually elongated incisors, and they are made up of ivory, a valuable material that has been used for centuries to make jewelry, carvings, and other objects.
Unfortunately, the demand for ivory has led to the poaching of African elephants, and their population has declined by over 50% in the past 50 years. African elephants are now listed as an endangered species, and the international trade in ivory is banned.
We can all help to protect African elephants by not buying ivory products and by supporting organizations that are working to conserve these amazing creatures.
