The term "disc jockey" was first used in 1937 by American radio commentator Walter Winchell. Winchell used the term to describe a radio announcer who played records, as opposed to a traditional live band. The term quickly caught on, and by the 1940s, "disc jockey" was the standard term for a radio personality who played recorded music.
The term "disc jockey" eventually evolved into "DJ" in the 1960s, as disc jockeys began to play more popular music and to experiment with different mixing techniques. Today, the term "DJ" is used to describe anyone who plays recorded music, whether on radio, in a club, or at a private party.
