Edo was a small fishing village until the early 17th century, when Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, chose it as the site of his new castle and administrative center. Under the Tokugawa shogunate, Edo grew rapidly and became one of the largest cities in the world.

In 1868, the Meiji Restoration took place, and the imperial capital was moved from Kyoto to Edo. The city was renamed Tokyo, which means "Eastern Capital."

Tokyo is now a modern metropolis and one of the most important cities in the world. It is a major center for business, finance, culture, and education.
