Knowing how to draw characters is good, but putting them in a situation to create a real illustration is better. Drawing a moving character in itself is not very complicated. But you have to give enough details and elements to make the viewer understand that the drawing is happening in motion, that there is an action in progress.
For this article, I decided to make someone fall, as a reference I chose Alice in Wonderland.
MAKE THE SKETCH OF THE MOVING CHARACTER
I'm not going to dwell on how to draw a character, I'm assuming that you know how to draw a character and that you just want to learn how to stage it.
To begin with, I will draw the body of my character.
Since my character is falling, the feet are not flat on the ground, so they are free to move.
The same goes for the arms which will tend to go to the sides to find a kind of balance.
Trying to jump off the top of a bench, you will unconsciously find that your arms will go to the sides to balance your body and make it fall on its feet.
Do not hesitate to produce the actions you want to draw to better understand the functioning of the body and its reflexes.
FINALIZE THE DRAWING OF THE CHARACTER
So be careful not to draw all the elements with the same force of speed!
For my drawing, the hair is almost horizontal, so it reacts well to falling, on the other hand the clothes are thicker, so they lift with a little more difficulty and form several folds, as if the fabric was struggling with the fall.
Now that you understand the principle, have fun drawing moving characters.
Nice walk-through. A process/making of video would be cool to watch as well.
