Have you ever been disconnected from the internet? How did you feel?

Yes, I have been out of a subscription on my network lines hence disconnecting me from the internet. These lines assist one to connect to the internet, but on the condition that you have bought a data bundle. Here in Nigeria there are different plans you can subscribe to based on your pocket and usage. One day, for some reason I was unable to get an easy access to the learning portal hence feeling rather frustrated when my subscription run out. I was unable to use any Internet services, call my friends, or use any forms of social networking or viewing current events.

Internet is widely used in everybody’s life as it represents the source of information and connection. I felt stranded every time that I had to go off line as if I did not belong to the twentieth century world. I observed the extent to which I depend on the internet in executing my daily activities and using my free time. The basic interactions such as receiving and sending emails, listening to music, or even finding moments of answers became impossible.

This has made me realize that future I need to be wise on how to minimize on charges on my data and to look for an alternative source of accessing the internet in case I exhausted all my data charges. It also made me recall the fact that from time to time, one should decrease his or her interactions with digital environment and increase interactions with physical environment.

How did you spend a day without internet?

It was somewhat liberating to do without the Internet for a whole day. I believe that had there been no notifications and no social media, I could have concentrated on things I usually do not pay attention to. I also began the day with a more extended and calm breakfast and got down to the finalization of a book I was eager to read.

Thus, in the afternoon, I just took a walk around the district where I live, trying to pay attention to details I seldom notice, take some fresh air and enjoy the existence of nature around me. I also had quality time to spend with the family and be able to converse much more without much interruptions of the screens. At the end of the day I saw that removing myself from technology made me able to appreciate things that one may not consider important due to the noise made by the technology.

Mention the necessity of internet in our life. (In your own knowledge.)

Today internet is ubiquitous and has heavily influenced the ways people interact, perform tasks, educate themselves, and have fun. It is a crucial utility for communication with relatives and friends via social networks, video conferencing, instant messengers. In business it facilitates remote working, market access, and effective information flow. In education, it can provide people with unlimited knowledge for classes, courses and research databases, which makes education to be open to all.

Entertainment is also available through the internet ranging from movies, music, games and even social networking. It has helped change the way that people shop; enabling easy and diversification at the touch of a button. Besides, the internet has a significant function in providing updated information and news on what is happening around the world.

In the sphere of medicine, it enables the use of telemedicine and obtaining immediate medical information. By and large, the role of the internet in increasing our efficiency, communication, and information affects every aspect of people’s lives, and has become a necessity.
