Account Key

During creation of Steemit account we are given a generated password that is called master password. This is very important. But beyond that we are given different types of keys to perform different tasks. Let’s talk about Security Keys in Steemit today.

We can first divide Key into two types.

  • Public key and
  • Private Key

These are again of four types

  1. Posting Key
  2. Active Key
  3. Owner Key
  4. Memo Key

Public keys:

Public keys are publicly accounced keys that you don't need to store in a safe place. These keys may be required if you want to encrypt data on the blockchain. You can check your public keys by visiting to SteemScan (https://steemscan.com/).

Private Keys:

Private keys are very important to us and private keys are layered in different levels. The function of each key is limited to a certain limit of task so that only the key that is needed for the task can be used.

1. Posting key:
You can only use this key for social activities. That is, you can do things like post, comment, vote etc with this key. No other work can be done with this key. Since wallet functions can be done with this key, it is the least sensitive of the keys. That is, you should not be too hesitant to use this key on any web site because with this key someone may be able to vote from your account, comment but not be able to do your wallet related tasks.

That is, when you do social activities, you will use this key and this key is only limited to social activities, but let's take a look at what you can do with this key:

  • Post and comment
  • Editing posts and comments
  • Upvote and downvote
  • Resteem any post
  • Follow and unfollow someone
  • Mute any unwanted accounts

2. Active key:
With this key you can do your financial tasks i.e. if you want to do any transaction then you must need this key. So understand how sensitive this is! Always avoid using this key anywhere other than a trusted website because if someone gets your active key it is possible to empty your wallet instantly. If you have liquid in your wallet like Steem and SBD then it can be transferred instantly with this key. Since it takes time (four weeks) to power down if powered up, if someone powers down using your key, you'll be able to see and will have account recovery & password change time. You'll lose liquids in no time. Let's take a look at what you can do with this key:

  • Transfer work.
  • Power up and power down.
  • SBD to Steem and Steem to SBD Conversion
  • Witness voting
  • Placement of buy and sell orders on any exchange
  • Change some information in profile
  • Creating new users etc.

3. Owner key:
As the name suggests, this is a kind of proprietary key, meaning that if you want to prove your ownership here on the blockchain, this is the key you will need. This key will help you recover one of your keys or recover your account if your key is lost or your account is hacked. Whoever has this key can claim ownership of the account. So as this key is essential for other key recovery, this key is definitely very sensitive and you should write it down carefully in a separate place or backup it very well.

This will allow you to recover your active key even if it is lost. Let's take a look at what you can do with this key:

  • You can reset your active and posting keys
  • Account can be recovered
  • Can deny voting rights.

4. Memo Key:
This key is needed if you want to send or receive a private message and convert it into a signal and view it later. Its use is very limited so no detailed discussion is needed.

  • To send encrypted messages
  • View any encrypted messages
