A blockchain is a decentralized digital ledger that consists of a list of data records. The information is divided into blocks that are organised chronologically and encrypted.
In order to protect digital documents from data theft, computer scientist Stuart Haber and physicist W. Scott Stornetta developed the first idea of a blockchain in the early 1990s. They did this by utilizing cryptographic techniques in a chain of blocks.
Many other computer scientists and cryptography aficionados were undoubtedly motivated by the work of Haber and Stornetta, and this eventually resulted in the development of Bitcoin, the first decentralized electronic payment system (or simply the first cryptocurrency).
Although blockchain technology predates cryptocurrencies, its potential wasn't fully understood until the 2008 launch of Bitcoin. Since then, interest in blockchain technology has gradually increased, and cryptocurrencies are now recognized on a bigger scale.
Blockchain technology is mostly used to track cryptocurrency transactions, but it is suitable for a variety of different types of digital data and has other potential applications. Bitcoin, which was created with a thorough and balanced combination of cryptography and game theory, is the oldest, safest, and largest blockchain network.
