This is because PoS and PoW remain the two major blockchain consensus mechanisms, each of them with their own efficiency profile. Generally speaking, PoS is more efficient in many respects when compared to PoW: energy consumption, scalability, and speed.
Energy Efficiency:
PoS is much more energy-efficient compared to PoW. The miners in the latter have to employ super-powerful computers to solve very complicated mathematical puzzles. These do require enormous amounts of electricity. This has become a target for environmental concerns, especially with Bitcoin's PoW system. On the other hand, in PoS, validators are chosen in regard to the number of tokens they stake. As a result, no energy-intensive mining should take place. Validators are randomly selected; hence, it is highly eco-friendly and cost-effective.
Scalability and Speed:
Most of the PoW blockchain networks, such as Bitcoin, possess rather slow transaction speed with limited scalability due to the fact that block mining heavily depends on time and computational power. However, in the case of PoS, things are much faster because the method is not dependent on heavy computations. It also provides the blockchains with faster confirmation of the blocks and higher throughput value concerning the transaction, making it increasingly suitable for major applications such as DeFi and dApps.
It requires quite a lot of energy consumption, and the transaction speed is also slower compared to PoS. PoS offers an alternative that is more scalable, faster in transaction time, and more energy-efficient but does introduce other challenges, such as a risk of centralization.
