Imran Khan: The Lionheart of Pakistan
As an articulate, magnetic personality, a great sportsman, and an ambitious reformationist, Imran Khan was one of the most recognizable political figures in Pakistan as soon as he started the cricket career. Born to a political and scion lineage Imran Khan undertook a mission, a mission that put him in opposition the conventional political strategies and created a new paradigm, a new paradigm where honor and respect has been given back to millions of Pakistanis.
Imran Khan, born on October 5th, 1952 in Lahore, Pakistan, in a very rich and influential family was destined for fame. His father, Ikramullah Khan Niazi, was a civil engineer and his mother, Shaukat Khanum, was a social worker cum philanthropist. He grew up in a fully cultural/religious manner but rather concentrated deeply in the sport of cricket which became his passion and legacy.
Imran Khan began his cricket journey when Pakistan Cricket team decided to pick him in year 1971. He evolved year after year into a legend, a phenomenon that he became known the world over. Besides captained Pakistan for a long time, he had the chance to play for many clubs including Sussex, Worcestershire and Duke of Norfolk’s XI. He presented Pakistan in104 ODIs and 319 Test wickets and World Cup in 1992 ICC cricket hall of fame cricketer.
But he was not just cricketer.Uncompromising and committed Imran Khan entered politics in 1996.He was the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). The word PTI stands for Pakistan Movement for Justice – the party was created with the goal of bringing establishing a progressive, democratic, and responsible state in the interest of the people of Pakistan.
Enduring so many adversities and resistance throughout his political life, Imran Khan remained considerate to his vision. He got the support of millions of his followers because of his determination, honesty, fight against corruption, and he believes in education. Khan, the founder of the PTI, got famous for engaging and revolutionary political speeches and firm positions on women’s rights, and religious minorities together with a social justice theme.
The desire for change that Imran Khan sought in 2013 was brought to its peak as he embarked on a large scale anti corruption protest. This movement for justice or dharna as to name it struck the very roots of the political system in Pakistan and mobilized thousands of people to on its support. However, unlike the previous PTI shut-downs the government did not yield to the demands of the PTI, but they should view this as an infancy stage of PTI and the youth power the party represents.
The elections in 2018 where PTI became the party which got the highest number of votes, testified to the extent to which people of Pakistan trusted Imran Khan. During Khan’s administration as the 22nd Prime Minister of Pakistan, aim at the initiation of numerous reforms. To overcome the effects of corrupt governance, economic instability and strained relations of Pakistan and South Asian region, the planned model was taken as ‘Naya Pakistan’ (New Pakistan).
But transformation of new Pakistan was far from smooth, it had many challenges. Despite this, Prime Minister Imran Khan has experienced a lot of resistance and within his party as well. But he has remained consistent with his vision of change – a better Pakistan and a just Pakistan.
On the personal level life has been full of tragedy and achievement for Imran Khan. His first marriage, to Jemima Goldsmith, a British socialite, was dissolved through divorce, although the couple had two sons, Sulaiman and Kasim. In 2018, he married Bushra Maneka a faith healer and a former civil servant.
The real life-annals of Imran Khan is the chronicle of a story of struggle, determination dreamer and an explorer of himself. The Lionheart of Pakistan through his multiple victories in the sporting arena as well as political and philanthropic endeavors has a key point demonstrated the spirit of indomitable spirit, belief in the Almighty and sheer un-flinching belief in switch norms and values no matter how hard the odd seems to be. He has carved his name into history’s logbook of cricketing giants but also in the hearts of millions and millions of Pakistanis who have entrusted the future of their beloved country, their hope for growth and relief from the vices of corruption that continue to plague the nation into the hands of this great man.
