The Goat: A Unique Livestock Animal, Ruminant Mammal

The goat (Capra aegagrus hircus) is quite an interesting ruminant mammal due to its special characteristics and its variability. Common for its peculiar horns and quick-witted physique, goat has been of significance in agriculture and civilization since time immemorial.

Goats come with horns that differ in size and shape depending on the breed. Both sexes of the animal have these horns, which serve defensive, communicative, and dominance-defining purposes. The digestive system of these animals consists of a four-chambered stomach which breaks down feeds using wet and internal mastication, and fermentation. This adaptation enables them to efficiently utilize abundant and diverse forage with minimal available time.

Besides the useful products such as milk, meat and fiber which they provide, goats are also regarded for their inquiry and fancyful activities. Goats are clever and social animals, thus they are pleasant pets as well as helpful livestock to households all over the world.
