The Moon seems white at night as it mirrors the sunlight. Though the color of the Moon shell is gray it reflects around 12% of sunrays due to its surface. During the nighttime when there is no sunlight directly available, it is this light that gets reflected and is seen by the human eye as white or off white. The atmosphere helps in increasing this effect by scattering the blue parts of the sunlight which gives off a more diffused look to the moonlight. Furthermore, there is an ability of the human eye to see better in darkness, this causes the whitish hue to be rather exaggerated. Due to atmospheric effects such as clouds and pollution, the Moon can sometimes have a yellowish or reddish tint, especially at dawn or during a lunar eclipse. But under ideal conditions, it can be seen as a very bright white color and a source of illumination at night.
