Animal population dynamics

The term ‘animal population dynamics’ is used when focusing on the factors that determine the changes in population size and its structure over time such as “it includes the rates of birth, death, immigration and emigration of particular species”. Focusing on changes of this type, it can be distinguished at least a biotic level: predation, competition and diseases or abiotic determinants such as climate and availability of habitats. - Biotic population growth is described as ‘exponential growth’ or ‘logistic growth’ characterized by limited resources that lead to a carrying-capacity. Animal populations are also influenced by human activity such as habitat loss or environmental degradation. These dynamics are important to know in the context of management and conservation of wildlife populations as well as predictions for the response of species to changing environment in order to maintain great ecosystems and biodiversity.
