History and Background
Tea is made from a plant known as Camellia Sinensis. Tea is a beverage and is mostly consumed drink after water. If we take a look at the history of Tea, we will conclude that the origin of Tea was southwest China northeast India, and north Myanmar. According to some evidence and historical reports, tea has been consumed in China from 5000 years ago.
Millions of people derive their livelihood from the production and processing of tea both in developed and developing countries. In some countries, it is the main source of income for the people and export revenue of some states.
Tea production and processing is an important sector. It plays an important role in rural development, food security, sustainable development, and poverty reduction.
International Tea Day
International Tea Day is observed to raise awareness about the long history of tea, its cultural importance, and its economic role. Keeping these three objectives in mind International Tea Day is celebrated on 21 May. Tea has been used for thousands of years and in some regions and societies, it has cultural values. In our Pakistani society, Tea is a very important cultural value. Tea beverage is served on different occasions and ceremonies like weddings, engagements, parties, and many more. If we look at the economic value of tea millions of people throughout the world are economically involved in this sector. It is the main profession of most of the poor people especially women in poor countries.
Tea Production and Sustainable Development
There are seventeen goals set for Agenda 2030. Tea production and processing play an important role in some of them.
- First goal of Sustainable development is "The reduction of extreme poverty". So tea sector plays a good role in poverty elevation mainly in poor countries.
- The second goal of sustainable development state " the fight against hunger" which is overcome by the tea production and processing sector.
- Goal fifth states "Empowerment of women". In the tea production and processing sector, most of the laborers are women. This sector empowers women.
- Goal-15 states "The sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystem" in which tea production and processing play a very important role.
