A General Overview

May 11 is annually celebrated worldwide as World Migratory Birds Day. In Canada and the United States World Migratory Birds Day is celebrated on the second Saturday of May while in Mexico, South and Central America, and Carrabian it is observed on the second Saturday of October. The celebration of this day aims to raise awareness among the public about the importance and conservation of Migratory Birds.
In 2024, its celebration title is World Migratory Birds Day to Focus on Insects. As insects are very important for birds so in this year the insects and their importance to migratory birds are the main focus of this annual ceremony. Insects are one of the most important sources of energy for migratory birds during breeding and migratory periods.
During migration, the bird actively seeks out insects in forests, fields, wetlands, and other habitats during its stopover. The insects are in abundance at stopover locations during migration periods. The abundance of insects supplies nourishment for birds and replenishes their energy for long journeys.
The decrease of insects in bird breeding points and avian migration routes is a serious threat to birds and their well-being. Several stopovers (Forests, grasslands, and wetlands) of migratory birds are converted to agricultural lands and urban development. The activity declines the insect population by destroying its habitat and increasing pollution. In the agricultural sector different pesticides, insecticides, and rodenticides are used which directly decline the population of insects. The decrease in insect population directly and indirectly affects the population of birds.
In 2024, the World Migratory Bird Campaign stress the conservation measure. It ensures the use of green agriculture and stress to reduce the use of pesticides and other chemicals in agriculture. Other measures included rehabilitating and connecting vegetation areas to provide food and shelter to migratory birds. Some migratory birds hunt at stop-over points we need to discourage this uncontrolled hunting because some bird species are endangered and threatened.

A general message to all public

The annual day is celebrated to raise awareness about something. Like another annual day, World Migratory Birds Day is celebrated to raise awareness about birds and their importance in the ecosystem. It does not mean that we arrange events and ceremonies on this day. Every day of the year is Bird Day we can arrange events and ceremonies every day for the protection and conservation of the charming and precious creator of Allah.
