The museum has one of the world's largest collections of bird specimens, with over 1 million items.
The nests are made of various materials, such as dry grass, bird excrement, and spider's webs. One example is the spectacled longbill's nest, which is the only known research specimen. Another interesting nest is that of the desert cisticola, which has a roof and an entrance hole bound by spider's webs.
The bokmakierie's nest demonstrates the handiwork of both male and female birds, with its neat, open-cup design, while the light-vented bulbul's nest is primarily made from twigs and bamboo leaves and is still in its original shipping packaging from 1896.
