The book, by visual artist Rob Kesseler and botanist Wolfgang Stuppy, explores the flourishing of plant life over the past 360 million years through a combination of scanning electron microscopy and close-up photography.

The images showcase various seeds, including the delicate calyx surrounding the fruit of the apple-of-Peru, the cross-section of a blue passion flower ovary filled with mature ovules, and the sinewy, textured nutlet of a yellow-flowered skullcap.

Other featured seeds include the bright red seed of Mesembryanthemum tetragonum, the tiny seed of a Douglas’ phacelia, and the honeycomb-shaped seed of Caiophora arechavaletae, which is lightweight enough to be dispersed by the wind. The book highlights the amazing adaptations of these seeds over millions of years, allowing them to interact with animals and the environment in remarkable ways.
