Ah, a fairly imposing brick church on the top of a hill... well, it does little pretty imposing when you are approaching from any of the sides! When it is dark, it is a touch on the spooky side of things... but in the daylight, it does look quite out of place in the native Australian landscape.
Still... I was in Canowindra (you don't say it like it is spelt!) for a concert for a local festival, and this was the main location of the concerts.
If we look away from the church, this is what you would see... and so now you understand why the church looks so imposing and out of place in the landscape!
On the inside, it does look quite nice though... nothing extravagant, and you do see that sort of aesthetic in many of the rural churches. It isn't like the middle of Europe, where many of the churches were quite ornately furnished, especially the Catholic ones. These churches were really quite colonial ones and with comparatively meagre resources to draw upon. So, they are a touch more austere in their design and decor.
It isn't a large church, but one that is comfortably sized for the area that it serves. And for a concert, it is easily made to feel nicely full... but I'm afraid that the acoustic was quite a bit deadened by all the carpet flooring!
As always, the stained glass windows are my favourite attraction in all of the churches. This one was no exception! Actually, the placement on the top of the hill in the bright Australian sun... well, this is the perfect place to showcase stained glass designs as the sun streams through and exposes all the details and colours on the glass.
... they are almost the old-age equivalent of bright neon lights and computer screens!
