Leipzig is a city that I have had cause to visit quite a bit during my music work. Leipzig was one of the most important cities in the life of JS Bach, and seeing as one of the orchestras that I play for regularly is pretty heavy on Bach in their programming... well, it means that most years I will end up in this city at least once or twice!
I used to have a friend that lived here for quite some time, and so I would often visit quite often to visit him as well... but he has since left the city, but I still ask him for his recommendations on where to eat... so that I can try and get away from the usual tourist haunts in the centre of the city.
One of the places that he recommended was Hans Im Gluck, which is a specialty burger place. Well... burgers in Germany, I wasn't that convinced, and I hadn't visited this restaurant until quite recently. It is pretty damn handy that it is right next to the main concert hall of Leipzig... and on this occasion, I was just too tired and hungry to go looking for something else, so I figured I may as well try this place out!
The Space
There is outdoor seating as you can see from the top outside shot of the restaurant. However, I generally prefer to sit indoors. Inside, there is a sort of bamboo and wood aesthetic... it is okay, but it strikes me a being a touch too trendy for me... and the other patrons looked a touch more fashionable than me. I guess that was the cocktail crowd... me, I was just a hungry and tired musician that had had a long day of travel before a rehearsal... so, I probably looked a little bit tired and scruffy. Well... tired, I always look scruffy!
The Menu
These days, you can't do anything without an origin story. Normally, it would have been considered the sole domain of superheroes... but now, every restaurant needs to have one as well. They managed to try and tie in the Oostalgia thing as well, with the walking man?
Honestly, I did find the menu a bit wanky. I prefer my burgers (and food in general) to be just descriptive... and not named.
... in keeping up with the fast food trend from America. There are meal options for lunch and dinner. Well, these are actually not so bad... a burger by itself is not much without a drink and a side of some sort. The evening meal comes with a cocktail instead of a drink... even better!
Lots of choices for a side... but I think that chips are the way to go with burgers. Of course, you could opt for something more healthy... like sweet potato chips? I'm up in the air about that though... Sometimes I like sweet potato chips... other times, I just find them too soggy. Dangerous choice if you don't know the place!
I'm afraid that I'm going to disappoint my readers and had opted for a non-alcoholic cocktail this time around. Remember... I had had a long day of travel and I still needed to make my way back to the hotel! This is a profoundly more difficult task when you are tipsy (I'm a bit of a lightweight... and worse when I'm tired!).
The Food
Okay... the cocktail was the Goldfink (the first one on the list)... a refreshing mango and mint based non-alcoholic cocktail. Oh wow, I really should just make these sorts of things at home! I've never really been that much of a cocktail fan... but I could definitely consider trying them out more often. Even non-alcoholic, they are pretty damn good!
The main event (a regular burger, I forgot the name...) and a side of regular chips. Okay... I wasn't expecting that much from a burger place... but wow, it was actually quite decent. Juicy burger, great buns... yep, I definitely should have tried this place earlier!
Plus, the chips were just perfect... crispy and nice and soft on the inside. Really, most places just don't bother putting too much effort into the sides, but it really shows when they do... I have to say that I was in burger and chips heaven... and the cocktail just rounded out a nice warm evening! I could feel the travel tiredness just take a back seat for a little while!
The Experience
The food was awesome.. perhaps a touch on the expensive side for what it was though. The staff were nice and friendly, but I didn't totally feel at ease in the restaurant... mostly it was due to the other diners and me feeling a bit underdressed and out of place. However, once I found a nice corner, I could just forget about that and eat in peace.
If you are in Leipzig, I can definitely recommend this Burger bar for a good evening feed... and probably also for a few cocktails to pass a nice lazy summer evening!
