The only reliance for the movement of about 20,000 people in 5 villages of Santhia in Pabna is a bamboo bridge. Every year the bridge breaks down and the villagers work together to rebuild the pot. This has been going on day after day since independence. There is no one to watch.
It is learned that Baleshwar river, a tributary of Baral river in Nagdemra union of Santhia upazila of Pabna, flows over Chininari Bilkalmi. Every year during the monsoon season, the villagers build pots and pans on the river and build bamboo bridges through voluntary work. About 20,000 people from at least 6 villages including Nalbhanga, Chininari Selanda, Charachethulia Bilkalmi, Khamar Sanila can cross this bamboo bridge.
Even students from nearby schools and colleges travel to Chininari Dakhil Madrasa, Bilkalmi Primary School, nearby Bera Al Hera School and College, Bera Government Degree College, Santhia Government College, Baghabari, Shahjadpur School and College with a 100-foot long bamboo bridge. As a result, accidents often happen. The only hope for the farmers to cross the agricultural commodity is that one bamboo bridge. Otherwise they have to go a long way and go through dirt roads. To go to the various markets in the vicinity, one has to cross with the risk of agricultural products. The long standing demand of the locals is for a bridge here.
They said that if there is a bridge there, not only the development of the area but also the connection with Santhia, Shahjadpur and Bera upazilas and Pabna-Dhaka highway will be possible easily.
Going to the area, it was seen that the villagers were repairing the bridge with bamboo by raising money up to the paved road in front of Abdul Hai's house on the other side of Golzar Prang's house in Chininari and Bilkalmi villages. Mozammel Hossain, a resident of Chininari village and principal of Chininari Dakhil Madrasa, is supervising them there.
He said, "Every year we build this bridge ourselves by raising funds from the villagers and through voluntary work." However, if a bridge is built with the help of the government, about 20,000 people from 5/6 villages will benefit.
On the other hand, Santosh of Chininari village, who came to build the bridge through Sechchashram, said, "Every year since independence, we build Sanko here through Sechchashram." There is no one to see us.
Harun Aur Rashid, chairman of the Nagdemra Union Parishad and general secretary of the Nagdemra Union A-League, said there needed to be a bridge there. In this way, the people of 4/5 villages will easily develop communication with the villages and towns. I will talk to the concerned department and arrange a bridge very soon inshallah.
Santhia Upazila Local Government Engineer Shahidullah said, "I will turn that remote area into a city by developing roads and bridges in the next 2019-20 fiscal year which will be visible."
Upazila Executive Officer Abdul Halim said, "I have instructed the Upazila Engineer to investigate the ground and take necessary steps."
