THIS IS MY KINGS ROTTERDAM WALK on TUESDAY DUTCH KINGSDAY

The fact that its the kings birthday today and that tomorrow we will have the new government rules against covid, has made that this is the first day that everybody is more positive again, in these weird times. Wednesday we can go to a terrasse again or a bar. We need that after a lockdown and semi lockdown for so long. So today I will take you along, my town of birth and all her beauty. This is the place our walk starts in the Markthal the giant icon near the water Maas. We park there in the catacombe where the remains of the bombing of the city are still on display in the parking area.

What is the MarketHall ?

This icon of my city is also called the Sistine chapel. This huge horseshoe shaped building is the place where food and housing come together and co exist like they have love for eachother. The perfect arch is a spectacular boe of colors and shapes. Inside there is an area of 11.000 square with over 100 food stand and locations. The ceiling is made of 4500 prices square aluminium panels of 152 square cm. The panels are acoustically equipped with 3 mm diameter holes. But most of all this is a great piece to just stare at with your head up high.

This is a part of the display of all that has been found while digging the Markthall and the apartments in this part of the city. The exhibition on display of archeological finds from medieval Rotterdam, excavated during the building and construction.

I will highlight the history, highlights and hot spots of this vibrant and most down to earth cities of Europe. The city has much modern architecture, fantastic museums, an important port and the great river Maas. I wish you a memorable read.

The city is founded in 1270 and became an official city in 1340. Its owns her name to the river Rotte. In my town there are 600.000 inhabitants and has teh largest port of Europe. Rotterdam was bombed in 1940 on 14 may, and she is teh second largest city. These photos here above are from the Koopgoot the center of the centre.

Rotterdam will host the Eurovision Songcontest in the south of the city in Ahoy. The covid rules might avoid the Eurovision celebration to be with an audience that is yet to be decided, but all over the city there are trams with the Eurovision message. The green - white flag has been this way since the Middle Ages. The green refers to the court of Weena and the white is the river Rotte. The flag is there from february 10th , 1949

This is the Coolsingel and this crossroad is where the trams ride through the city centre

We came from the Market thal, via the Hoogstraat to the Koopgoot and the Coolsingel. The buildings are the blanket you walk under and with the nice weather it makes Rotterdam so attractive. We have so many tourists visiting the city every year, that this is for other europeans the perfect city trip. I love asking tourists if I can help them make a picture with the icons of my birth town.

This is the Lijnbaan, the part where the shopping centre starts, and the Stadsschouwburg plein, the city theater square, with the big imax cinema. We have been walking this way , I marked it on the pinmapple map.

The shops are a possibility with an appointment made 4 hours in advance and with a maximum of 10 - 50 people in a store, depending the size of the store. Its quietly shopping just not as we were used to in our busy city. But covid rules are very important and also in the Netherlands we have big troubles. But walking around with my camera is also great to see the city from another view, and with the head up more than normal when I only look at the windows.

The street from the Schouwburgplein , leads to the Kareldoormanstraat, with the more high end shops. This is the part that crosses the city over to the south part. Rotterdam stands for the city of getting things done, the inhabitants live by that rule, but I also think that its a thing that is typical for dutchies , always strong minded, and do-ergs. I am like that way too, I am always polite straight. For some hard to handle.

Every district of Rotterdam has its own character. Around Central Station you find multinationals, hotels and great restaurants. In the Laurence district you have the most beautiful Laurens church, and the Market hall where we started, and all the parts surviving the bombing. You have the Lloyd district in the southwest of town, its the working area for many creative entrepeneurs with monumental warehouses that are also houses and offices. The old Harbour was a to far walk for the boys but we saw the water with the boats at the begin next to teh maritime museum, so you see a bit of this in the pictures I made withheld boats. Also the Maasboulevard is also so nice, again to far a walk with the kids.

This is the Witte the Blanc street, nowadays the plays to be for art and beer. From there we crossed the street passing by the Maritime museum and the water. If we would have turned right and drove for a bit we would have been able to be in the Hillergersberg, Blijdorp and Kralingen the parts with the big and expensive houses. There are many B&B’s to book when you visit Rotterdam. For the leading museums you have to walk the Witte de Blanc and turn right to the museum park and the art Boymans depot. I wrote about this a few weeks ago. https://peakd.com/hive-179017/@brittandjosie/rotterdam-depot-is-my-entry-to-the-reflectionscontest-shadowhunters

I did a black and white series aswell even before the blog i made when the roads there weren’t finished yet. They are now !

This part is the part where the the leading museums are the Kunsthal, Kunstminn and the Museum park near one of the biggest hospitals in Rotterdam where my kids were born. The west district has an elclectic mix of cultures and we have many expats livinghere for a couple of years, and ofcourse aswell many foreign students. Its wonderful and many languages are heard on the streets and in the subway. Ofcourse all over the city we have art galleries, shops, design, streetart and a very vibrant nightlife, I did make very much use of that for a lonnnggggg time. And those years were THE BEST !

We passed the river Maas and the place where you can catch the water taxi to the famous hotel New York. Again I also blogged about this before, let me know if you want the link to this amazing hotel.

The harbour has a lot of ships that are bed and breakfasts or hotels. With great features and docking places. Great to photograph.

This is a hotel with a hot tug, a tub that can sail through the harbour, and its so cool eventhough I never booked one before.

This is the new part with new apartments with so much high class things I heard the rent was 2500 euro per month. But there are so many houses needed and they will be rented out when they are finished I know that for sure.

The building in picture one is THE ROTTERDAM, urban architecture at its best. An icon between the center and south passage. The 3 linked towers not visible in my photo angle are the best way to add all in one. The name refers to the ship the rotterdam, these days a hotel aswell. Also the red bridge is a famous icon aswell and a busy car passaat to the south .

The route we walked crossed a few parts that are all different with different things to attract us as inhabitants and also the tourists.

The street art is wonderful, the township makes sure that all the builder buildings and building sites are being made attractive to allow street artists to do their thing and show the art to Rotterdam and the world through social media and the art on its own.

CUBE Houses on Blaak. Blaak is also the market place , the place where the market hal is and the place where the Cubes are built. The striking yellow cube houses were built in 1984 and iconic. Each individual house represents a tree and all houses together form a forest. We have 38, there ought to be 74 but the money was not enough. One of the cube houses, designed bu Blom who also made the famous pencil building also in my picture, one of those cubes is open to visit and see how it is to live in a cube home.

And we are passing the famous Maarten Toonder art in front of the Blaak subway and the Market hall wher our car is, and where I had my first Steemit meetup in person with Soyrosa, another lady of Hive, we met up there and had lunch there about three years ago.

We did some shopping for dinner and went to the car. In covid days this is as much as we can do. Maybe tomorrow the rules will be better and than again I am still affraid to catch the virus so I wont go to a restaurant and sit on a terrasse just yet. Vaccine is needed but it not my age turn yet. Untill then this is a treat and I’ve taking you along in my city. Ofcourse there is so much more to tell about this favorite place on Earth, but I have to make room for other blogs to do, so untill next time with love from Rotterdam.
