Duke de Richelieu meets the guests of Odessa. It is he who greets everyone who arrives in the city by sea. The monument to Duke (this is what Odessa residents call him) is located above the Potemkin Stairs. He looks at the Marine Station and the Black Sea.
The bronze monument to the revered Duke was unveiled in 1828. It is curious that this turned out to be the very first monument erected in Odessa. The project was created by Boffo and Melnikov. The monument was cast by Yekimov.
A few words for Richelieu himself
Duke took part in the storming of Ishmael. Or rather, fortresses. In 1803, Richelieu was appointed mayor. From 1805 to 1814 he was the governor-general of Odessa. It is interesting that he decided to return to his homeland, to France, after the Bourbons returned to the throne. Almost immediately, he took over as prime minister at the court of King Louis XVIII. Duke died on May 16, 1822. He died at home. The cause of death was a cerebral hemorrhage.
Monument to Duke to be
As soon as the news of Duke's death arrived in Odessa, Count Langeron decided to appeal to the citizens of the city. In particular, he offered to chip in and figure out a monument to this outstanding man. Indeed, it was during his work that Odessa became a real seaport and a seaport of the Empire.
Count Vorontsov ordered the sculpture to Martos. He quickly grasped the monument. As a result, Duke was dressed in Roman. Togu. They put the scrolls in their hands. The brass high reliefs deserve special attention. They are very symbolic. Shows trade, agriculture and justice. On the front side we see a chic inscription. We look at the picture and video.
Interesting Facts
Pay attention to the bas-relief with Themis. This time, the goddess of justice appears before us without the usual blindfold. That is, Themis must see. Who is in front of her? Okay, that's a topic for another conversation.
Now it's time to look at the monument itself. Duke is not like us. Art critics believe that the sculptor did not draw well. He is not a portrait painter. Accordingly, the image is typical. To be frank, Duke is most like Guy Julius Caesar. Especially in a tunic.
Thus, residents of Odessa respect their history. Yes, it is ambiguous. Nevertheless, the city itself is far from being as simple as it seems at first glance. Here you can find amazing sights and monuments to famous, outstanding figures who have done a lot of useful things for Odessa. This is not my last material for outstanding citizens of Odessa.
