During our Trans-Mongolia Express adventure, my wife and I traveled from Beijing, China by train all the way to St Petersburg, Russia. Of all the cities that we visited during that trip, both my wife and I agreed that the most beautiful city was St. Petersburg which has managed to capture our hearts.
St Petersburg is a city in Russia's Northwestern Federal District, on the Baltic Sea delta of the Neva River. Piter is the informal name for the city, which was previously known as Petrograd and Leningrad. Tzar Peter the Great established it on May 27, 1703 as a "window to Europe," and it served as the Russian Empire's capital for more than two centuries. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, the government relocated to Moscow, and St. Petersburg ceased to be the capital. This city is Russia's second-largest city, with a population of about 4.8 million people in its metropolitan region.
We were very fortunate to be visiting St Petersburg at end of May 2017 and were able to experience White Nights first hand. The White Nights, or Beliye Nochi in Russian, are an atmospheric phenomena that occurs from the end of May until the middle of July in St. Petersburg. The sun never entirely sets during this time, and the sky remains bright throughout the night, with a glow similar to that of sunset.
My wife and I spend a total of 5days at St Petersburg and went home with many wonderful memories of white nights.
