The taxi driver who took me to the airport from the center of Havana is the prototype of the wealthy Cuban, not the fancazzista who waits for someone from the exterior to pay the cuenta, but the one who works his way up to have a good life.
I don't know if the taxi belongs to him or to the state, but he told me that he brings home between 130 and 180 euros every day, I haven't elaborated on whether these are clean or if he should deduct the costs, it's still a good profit.
He has the casa de renta next to the one where I stayed in calle Virtudes, 2 cuartos, one like an apartment that he rents for 40 dollars / euros a day the other more like a room that he offers for 30 which is still a nice to pay.
The renta is run by his wife, he certainly picks up and takes each customer to the airport as well as roaming them around the city and the restaurants.
When he picked me up, that is, he knocked on the door next to him, in the car there were 2 Israelis on their first trip to Cuba, we left them 3 cuadres from home where there were some restaurants for dinner.
The guy is also the contact person for a couple of Israeli travel agencies, they send him clients that he picks up, settles in his house and in the other nearby houses obviously taking the commission as it should be.
He told me that at the age of 45, with these incomes, a taxi, a renta and its trafficking, including currency exchange, he really doesn't think about leaving Cuba.
In addition to his wife and family, he has some good situations around the capital, he works a lot but allows himself what he wants, now he thinks of raising the house one floor and making 2 more apartments for rent.
It can be the demonstration, if you like, that if the Cuban sees
of the fruits of his work he behaves exactly as any of us would, without looking at schedule and rhythms.
Among other things, an amusing character who, having brought people everywhere, also knows Las Tunas very well.
