The mysterious tunnel...
The tunnel is a special creation hidden in Galgiriyakanda where it is said that the two Princes Saliya and Ashokamala were hidden.
There are different opinions among the villagers about this tunnel.
After learning that King Dutu Gemunu's only son Prince Saliya is hiding in Galgiriyakanda with Ashokamala, a sad girl, it is believed by many that the army of King Dutugemunu has surrounded Galgiriya mountain to find Prince Saliya. There are various opinions that Saha Rajanganaya has reached the reservoir.
About 100 years ago, a big cobra lived in this mountain and that cobra lived in this tunnel and a doctor who treated the burns caused by an accident to the cobra is told by the villagers who are currently living in that area.
After entering this tunnel and going some distance, you will find three more tunnels, one way to Anuradhapura, another way to Rajangana, and the other way is to a Buddha chamber with a golden Buddha statue. I also like the somewhat ironic story that Ashokamala's pollos curry is still inside this tunnel.
All those stories can be just gossip. However, in my opinion, finding such a creation in the longest mountain of Sri Lanka has hidden many facts about the history of our country.
Although there are people who do various researches about history in our country, none of them have done any research about this tunnel. It may be because there are few people who know about this place or because there is not as much truth in this tunnel as is mentioned in folklore. There is no evidence that anyone has ever crossed this tunnel except to infer the truth and falsity from external appearances. Some say that only one old man entered this tunnel and never came out again...
If anyone enters this tunnel, the doors of the tunnel will be closed. One hears various ideologies such as that it will never be possible to come out again, that there is a stream of underground water in the middle of the tunnel, and that air mixing with the interior of the tunnel has created the air vents.
Currently, this tunnel has become a habitat for bats and it is very difficult to enter the tunnel due to the collapse of rocks and waste of bats for about 100 meters, but after that distance, the plain road is clear, but there is no air that is clean enough to breathe. The journey is amazing.
After going the maximum distance (only 300M) with great difficulty, you will find only polished rock and a mud hole with a diameter of only 6 feet. It can be concluded that because this tunnel was not used for a long time, it was covered with soil and water seeps into the rock and the soil layer has turned into mud.
Otherwise, it may have been closed by someone on purpose.
Located in the middle of a 450 meter high mountain range, this tunnel is almost 300 meters above the ground level, so somehow this tunnel needs to be connected to the ground, so the entrance to the tunnel is covered with mud.
All these things can be confirmed if you see them yourself.
Because this tunnel is located in the Saliya Aranya section in Galgiriyakanda, it is not possible to reach this station without the permission of Viharavasi Theros. A special permit must be obtained to enter the tunnel.
