In a small village on the coast of Sumatra
, there lived a child named Malin Kundang and his mother. They live in poverty, but the mother always tries to give the best for her child. Every day, his mother works hard to support Malin, hoping that one day her child can become a successful person and raise the status of their family. Malin Kundang grew up to be an intelligent and diligent child. However, life in the village which was full of difficulties made him feel dissatisfied. Malin often looks out to sea, hoping that one day he can go far from the village and achieve a better life. "Mother, one day I will go abroad and come back as a rich man," he said to his mother. One day, the opportunity came. A large ship docked at the beach of their village, and Malin felt that this was the time. He asked his mother for permission to go abroad. With a heavy heart, the mother allowed it, but she said, "Malin, don't forget your mother. Stay humble and remember your origins.” Malin went sailing, leaving his village and mother behind. On the journey, he worked hard, and luck was on his side. He eventually became a successful trader, had abundant wealth, and married a beautiful woman from a rich family. However, in his happiness, Malin began to forget his promises to his mother. Several years passed, Malin never came home or told his mother. The mother remained faithfully waiting for her child on the beach, hoping that one day Malin would return. Until one day, news came that a rich trader had anchored in their village on a large ship. The mother was sure it was Malin and rushed to the beach to greet him.
