The Greed of an Instant

I will renounce everything except affection,
and I carry a scepter and a crown,
the first made of iron, the second of heath,
to be the ephemeral king
of this unique and brief love
that dissolves in departures
and fragments in questions
like those of lovers
whom the light dazzles and transforms.
Let me reign in you
only for the time of a lightning strike
igniting the dry grass of the peaks.
And if I must stand guard,
let it be around your sleep,
in an ecstasy of lips upon the grass,
in a delirium of kisses upon the belly,
in a wonder of fingers beneath the clothes.
I was dead and didn’t know it, you know,
that there is a time within this time
for us to be reborn with the corals
and to be eternal in the greed of an instant.
