SEASTONE is the sustainable alternative to concrete in small-scale product design, an all-female project.
Designers Hyein Choi and Jihee Moon founded the start-up Newtab-22, with the aim of proposing products derived from natural, new or neglected materials that guarantee sustainability, innovation and design.
As in the case of shells that are not biodegradable and have a very high cost of disposal, it is estimated that every year the fishing industry must dispose of over 7 million tons of shells.
This is where the SEASTONE project started, shells being rich in calcium carbonate, i.e. limestone material at the base of cement and concrete; they become a sustainable alternative to make small-scale products at the moment: decorative tiles, table tops, plinths and vases and could also become a viable alternative to plastic in the production of various items while reducing carbon emissions.
So shells destined for landfills are ground into a fine powder, then mixed with natural, non-toxic binders, and finally allowed to solidify in special molds.
There is still a long way to go to be able to replace cement and concrete that are among the largest producers of carbon emissions, but a small step forward has been made, in the meantime SEASTONEcan find space in our homes, allowing us to eliminate all those toxic and polluting materials with which we are accustomed to live.
Everything is feasible and when they tell us that it is not possible is only a problem of economic convenience, which apparently has always been the thing that makes the world go round ... but for how long?

Very interesting, It can be done by women. One more thing, it can be an alternative to reduce dependence on companies that produce cement.
If the production cost is not too expensive, we can make it for our own needs.
Thanks for sharing

It is a great way to help the environment, a few months ago I heard that in some countries plastic bottles are reused to make houses, I think it is great, it helps the environment and helps people to generate income, it is something in which everyone wins, your post is very interesting

Reusing products is a good idea to have a balance with the environment, it hurts that not all people think that way. I see that the final product looks good, it is a good step, I hope they continue to perfect it so that it can be used in other phases of construction.

It's true unfortunately not everyone understands how fundamental it's to change our lifestyle and the old production system. :-)

They are great women, creating alternatives to environmental sustainability. I thought, why don't we try to use it?
