I write while I am moving to the island of Elba, to take a breath of fresh air and get a bit away from the routine.
It is a completely improvised holiday, thanks above all to some family friends who have a house in Rio Elba and who, having returned yesterday from vacation, offered me to go there with my friends for some days.

It has been years since I went to the Island of Elba, even then hosted by other, closer friends. Going back is also a bit of a blast from the past, even if we were in a completely different town at the time.
I think back to that comfortable little house that suddenly became small in the face of the number of people it housed. I think back to the silly arguments about sleeping places or about the mess in the kitchen. The walks under the sun to get to the sea, the colored umbrellas, the crystal clear water, me reading Borges for the first time, and that time when he took a bath at night, with the moon lighting up almost to day. I think about the evening walks on the harbor, the green apple ice cream, the endless chats, the drawing that a friend made me and that I still have, a few evenings spent dancing.
I was still in my youth, and it seemed to me that the world was both simpler and more complex.

Returning to take the ferry, after years, is a refreshing emotion. I hope that the whole holiday will be so, also because I go back to work on Monday.
I would have preferred to take a vacation outside Italy, but the Covid situation worries me too much to risk a longer trip. In fact, even in Elba the number of cases is growing, and everything is booked, so attention must be kept constantly high. But I'm used to this, I immediately put masks and a nice disinfectant in my suitcase to use in the whole house as soon as I arrived.

Buongiorno a tutti,
Scrivo mentre mi sto spostando verso l'isola d'Elba, a prendere una boccata d'aria per allontanarmi un po' dalla routine.
È una vacanza del tutto improvvisata, merito soprattutto di alcuni amici di famiglia che hanno la casa a Rio nell'Elba e che, essendo tornati ieri dalle vacanze, mi hanno proposto di andarci con gli amici per qualche giorno.

È da anni che non vado all'Isola d'Elba, anche allora ospitato ma da altri, più stretti, amici. Tornarci è un anche un po' un tuffo nel passato, anche se allora eravamo in tutt'altra cittadina.
Ripenso a quella casetta confortevole che diventava improvvisamente piccola a fronte del numero di persone che ospitava. Ripenso alle sciocche discussioni per i posti letto o per il disordine in cucina. Le camminate sotto il sole per arrivare al mare, gli ombrelloni colorati, l'acqua cristallina, io che leggevo Borges per la prima volta, e quella volta in cui si fece il bagno di notte, con la luna che illuminava quasi a giorno. Le camminate serali sul porto, il gelato alla mela verde, le interminabili chiacchierate, il disegno che mi fece un amico e che ancora ho, qualche serata passata a ballare.
Ero ancora nel pieno della giovinezza, e mi sembrava che il mondo fosse al contempo più semplice e più complesso.

Tornare a prendere il traghetto, dopo anni, è un'emozione rinfrescante. Spero che lo sia l'intera vacanza, anche perché lunedì riprendo a lavorare.
Avrei preferito fare una vacanza fuori Italia, ma la situazione Covid mi preoccupa troppo per rischiare un viaggio più lungo. Anche all'Elba in realtà il numero dei casi è in crescita, ed è tutto pieno di prenotazioni, per cui occorrerà mantenere costantemente alta l'attenzione. Ma a questo sono ormai abituato, in valigia ho messo subito mascherine e un bel disinfettante da usare nell'intera casa appena arrivato.
