Goodmorning & buon 25 Aprile!

Today, before I go to celebrate (in a small way and for what Covid grants), I want to explain to non-Italians why we celebrate April 25th and why this date is so important for Italians (although people ultra-right think otherwise). For this reason, today this (short) post is only written in English.

April 25th ( 1945 ) is a national holiday in Italy as the day of Liberation from the Nazi and Fascist regime thanks to the forces of the Resistance (the set of political and military movements that opposed Nazi-fascism in Italy).
It was therefore, and at the same time, a war of liberation from foreign occupation, and a civil war.

The National Liberation Committee of Upper Italy (CLNAI) from Milan proclaimed by radio at 8 am on April 25th the general strike against all the territories still occupied by the Nazi-fascists.
The radio release made by Sandro Pertini ends as follows:
“Citizens, workers! General strike against the German occupation, against the fascist war, for the salvation of our lands, our houses, our factories. As in Genoa and Turin, you confront the Germans with the dilemma: to surrender or perish.”

From morning to evening Milan was liberated by the partisans, and Benito Mussolini was forced to flee from Milan (and subsequently captured and killed on April 28th).
Within a week of this radio message, all of northern Italy was liberated.
Although then the official surrender of the Nazi-Fascist forces took place on the following May 3, April 25th was chosen as the symbolic date of the Liberation because from this day on there was an escalation of revolts and liberations.

On the day of the Liberation in Italy it is customary to celebrate with relatives and friends. Bella Ciao is sung.
Numerous initiatives are made throughout Italy to commemorate this day and the dead soldiers and partisans who made it possible.
One of the most important institutional celebrations sees the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister go to the Altare della Patria in Rome to leave a laurel wreath.

Happy 25th April everyone!
