As you know, Italy is the country in the world with the largest number of Unesco sites along with China and visiting a site or monument declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, when traveling, is a recommended experience to get to know these wonders of art, architecture or archeology and which have been considered unique and important for the history of world culture.
In Italy practically every region has its own UNESCO Site, demonstrating the enormous and precious historical and cultural heritage that Italy possesses and which represents a great economic resource for our country where cultural tourism is the driving force of the sector.
Today I show the only site declared by UNESCO that is located in Sardinia (Italy), the region where I live.

Sardinia is famous all over the world for its fantastic sea, its beaches and the beauty of its coasts: 2,000 KM of coastline for long unspoiled stretches.

But its archaeological heritage is also exceptional and unique in the world. The inhabitants of Sardinia are very proud of this ancient civilization which has left many marks on our territory.
Only in Sardinia you can see the Nuragic buildings scattered throughout its territory, witnesses of an ancient culture full of charm and mystery.

There are more than 8,000 of these fascinating and majestic towers which, if you walk along the roads of the region, can be seen dominating the landscape of Sardinia.
Silent guardians of the territory are the testimony of an ancient and widespread anthropization of our territory.

The Nuragic complex of Barumini is the most important archaeological site in Sardinia, the best known and most visited. "Su Nuraxi" by Barumini is in fact the most complete and best preserved example of the many nuraghi that can be seen around Sardinia. The Nuraghe is an imposing building with a civic-military function, built from dry stones, whose rooms are covered with tholos, built between the Middle Bronze Age and the Iron Age, more than 3000 years ago!

The archaeological site of "Su Nuraxi di Barumini", located a few kilometers from Cagliari, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997 as the best preserved example of this unique prehistoric architecture in the world.
Visiting the Nuraghe of Barumini and its surrounding village where the many circular huts are visible and well preserved is an exciting experience.

The archaeological site of “Su Nuraxi di Barumini”, located a few kilometers from Cagliari , has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997with this motivation:
“Su Nuraxi di Barumini
During the late 2nd millennium B.C. in the Bronze Age, a special type of defensive structure known as nuraghi (for which no parallel exists anywhere else in the world) developed on the island of Sardinia. The complex consists of circular defensive towers in the form of truncated cones built of dressed stone, with corbel-vaulted internal chambers. The complex at Barumini, which was extended and reinforced in the first half of the 1st millennium under Carthaginian pressure, is the finest and most complete example of this remarkable form of prehistoric architecture.”

The archaeological complex is located a few kilometers from the small and charming center of Barumini, the starting point for a visit to the UNESCO site which retains interesting traditional buildings, beautiful churches and a museum complex located in the ancient Casa Zapata.

The visit to the Nuraghe of Barumini, in normal conditions, takes place with the guidance of some young people from the cooperative that manages the site and who, for small groups of people, take you to the discovery of this ancient monument. Not everyone can visit it due to its peculiarity of access inside the towers which is not exactly easy.

A visit to the splendid Archaeological Museum of Cagliari will allow you to see many artifacts that were found during the excavations carried out to highlight these great archaeological structures: they are the very particular Nuragic Bronzes, small statuary made of bronze, representative of human or animal figures, of expressiveness.

The visit to the Nuragic site of Barumini generally lasts an hour and the cost of the ticket varies from 14 euros to 6 euros depending on the age but with the same ticket you can also visit the Casa Zapata and the G.Lilliu information center which are located in the nearby town.

The Barumini site can be reached by own means or with special guided tours that are organized with departure from the city of Cagliari.
Naturally in this period the site is closed, like all museums and cultural places in Italy, following the anti-Covid restrictions but, we hope, that it will soon be possible to resume our usual habits.
In this post I published a very nice video that allows you to visit the Nuraghe from above.
On the website of the Barumini Foundation, which manages and takes care of the archaeological monument, you will find all the useful information for your visit.

Los habitantes de Cerdeña están muy orgullosos de esta antigua civilización que ha dejado muchas huellas en nuestro territorio.

No es para menos, es una arquitectura hermosa, razón suficiente para sentir orgullo.

Grazie mille|

Italy has a great history indeed, reaching far back in time. And good food, too... :)
Lately I have come to look at some places in Umbria, and Assisi in particular. I live in a fairly old town in Germany, but what they have there is incredible. Not quite as old as what you presented here, but still - and it all being used still. Churches and houses from the 11th, 12th, 13th century, and lots of them. And even a temple on the main square, built 40 BC! The houses we proudly have here, from the 17th and 18th century, would go under "recently built" there I assume. :)

Yes, in my region the archaeological evidence takes us very far in time .... Thanks for stopping by

I already knew Su Nuraxi di Barumini thanks to a friend from Cagliari, unfortunately I have not yet managed to visit these wonders directly, but after your beautiful photos and your descriptions, I mark it as a place to see as soon as you can return to travel!

Bella scelta! Molto originale! Mi dispiace che alcuni ti commentano ma non lasciano il voto!

Non importa...non tutti hanno forse messo a fuoco l'iniziativa....Un passo alla volta.!

Giusto!
