With this post I would like to provide some brief notions about the topic mentioned in the subject.
The context in which we operate is that of the grammar of the English language.

Past Simple
In this article I try to briefly explain the use of the PAST SIMPLE.
The Past Simple is a verb tense that is part of English grammar. It is used to describe actions completed at a specific moment in the past. Be careful, the action that is described with the Past Simple must not continue at the moment in which we are speaking, it is important to understand that the Past Simple is used for something in the past that has ended.

To construct the Past Simple, add +ed to the end of each verb. For example, to the word work, we will add worked.
But now we must make a distinction. The rule just described applies to regular verbs, but not to irregular verbs.

Regular verbs
Here is an example of Past Simple with regular verbs
(Base form)-->(Past tense)
Help --> Helped
Kiss --> Kissed
Change --> Changed
Walk --> Walked
Cook --> Cooked
Play --> Played

Irregular verbs
Here is an example of Past Simple with regular verbs
(Base form)-->(Past tense)
Drive --> Drove
Eat --> Eaten
Find--> Found
Get--> Got
Go--> Went
Have--> Had

We use the Past Simple to talk about actions and situations that happened and ended in the past
Example:
If we want to inform someone that yesterday we bought a new shirt we must use the Past Simple because we are talking about an action that happened and took place in the past and that has already ended.
So the sentence will be the following (the verb in the past simple form is in bold)
I bought a new dress yesterday.
Example 02:
If while we are talking to a friend we want to inform him that yesterday we went to the theater, it is obvious that this action has already passed and ended. When we construct the sentence we will have to use the Past Simple. Remember that andare, in the English language, is an irregular verb, remember that go in the past tense form becomes went.
Below is the sentence with the past tense verb in bold:
Yesterday I went to the theater.

We use the Past Simple to talk about habitual actions in the past
The Past Simple is also used to describe habitual actions that took place in the past.
Example:
We are talking to a friend of ours and we want to tell her that in the past our children always went to school by BUS. In this case we are dealing with habitual actions that took place in the past, so in this case we must use the Past Simple.
The sentence, with the verb written in the Past Simple form in bold, is the following:
They always went to school by bus.

Conclusions
The Past Simple in English is used to describe actions and situations that happened and ended in the past and also habitual actions of the past

Past Simple
In questo articolo provo a spiegare brevemente l'uso del PAST SIMPLE.
Il Past Simple è un tempo verbale facente parte della grammatica inglese. Viene usato per descrivere azioni completate in un momento specifico nel passato. Attenzione, l'azione che viene descritta con il Past Simple non deve continuare nel momento in cui stiamo parlando, è importante capire che il Past Simple viene usato per qualcosa del passato che è terminato.

Per costruire il Past Simple si aggiunge +ed alla fine di ogni verbo. Esempio, alla parola work, aggiungeremo worked.
Però ora dobbiamo fare una distinzione. La regola appena descritta vale per i verbi regolari, ma non per i verbi irregolari.

Verbi regolari
Qui di seguito un esempio di Past Simple con verbi regolari
(Base form)-->(Past tense)
Help --> Helped
Kiss --> Kissed
Change --> Changed
Walk --> Walked

Usiamo il Past Simple per parlare di azioni e situazioni che sono accadute e terminate nel passato
Esempio:
Se vogliamo informare qualcuno che ieri abbiamo comprato una nuova camicia dobbiamo usare il Past Simple perchè stiamo parlando di un azione avvenuta e svoltasi nel passato e che è già terminata.
Quindi la frase sarà la seguente (il verbo nella forma del past simple è in grassetto)
I bought a new dress yesterday.
Esempio 02:
Se mentre stiamo parlando con un amico vogliamo informarlo che ieri siamo stati a teatro, è ovvio che questa azione è già passata e terminata. Quando costruiremo la frase dovremo usare il Past Simple. Ricordiamo che andare, nella lingua inglese, è un verbo irregolare, ricordiamo che go nella forma past tense diventa went.
Qui di seguito la frase con il verbo past tense in grassetto:
Yesterday I went to the theatre.

Usiamo il Past Simple per parlare di azioni abituali nel passato
Il Past Simple viene usato anche per descrivere azioni abituali che si volgevano in passato.
Esempio:
Stiamo parlando con una nostra amica e vogliamo riferirgli che in nostri figli in passato sono andati a scuola sempre prendendo il BUS. In questo caso siamo davanti ad azioni abituali che si sono svolte nel passato, quindi in questo caso dobbiamo usare proprio il Past Simple.
La frase, con il verbo scritto in forma Past Simple in grassetto, è la seguente:
They always went to school by bus.

Conclusioni
Il Past Simple in inglese viene usato per descrivere azioni e situazioni che sono accadute e terminate nel passato e anche azioni abituali del passato
