The human body is made up of building blocks called cells. These cells lie side by side and on top of each other. Something binds these cells together. This is the cholesterol. It is found in all cells of the body. It is oily, so it is a liquid.
TYPES OF CHOLESTEROL
There are two main types of cholesterol
- High density lipoprotein (HDL)
- Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL)
FUNCTIONS OR IMPORTANCE OF CHOLESTEROL IN THE BODY
The High Density Lipoprotein is considered the good cholesterol. It is useful in many ways:
- As blood carries oxygen the life giving air round the body, so does cholesterol distribute fat all over the body so that the body builds up evenly else one hand can be bigger than the other, etc.
- It produces oil to make the skin look smooth and shinny.
- It helps the hair grow healthily and shinny.
- It produces the body controlling substances called HORMONES.
- The hormones influence growth and development.
- The liver uses it to make bile which helps to digest food.
- It produces vitamin D for strong bones.
FUNCTIONS OF LOW DENSITY CHOLESTEROL (LDL)
The low Density cholesterol is the bad cholesterol which is gotten from our daily nutrition. If we eat much oily and fried food, it produces the bad cholesterol. We also get it from butter and much animal products like meat, milk and cheese.
The bad cholesterol blocks the free flow in the body system, that is blocking or obstructing the transport system.
The major route in the body system are the arteries and veins.
Arteries carry oxygenated blood from the heart where it is pumped to every other organ of the body while the veins carry unrefined blood from every part of the body to the heart for refining.
While HDL allows easy flow of the fats evenly round the body and the fatty wastes out of the body, the LDL blocks or narrows the way for this movement. And when this free movement is obstructed, the person begins to have pains in that particular part of the body as well as develop some heart conditions. This health condition is called ATHEROSCLEROSIS meaning blockage of the arteries.
