There is a very widespread belief that eating a lot of carrots and vegetables or drinking their extracts can cure myopia (near-sightedness) and eliminate the need for glasses and the lens people wearr for it. This myth is although real popular but not supported by scientific evidence. To understand the basics Lets dive into the real causes of myopia (Near sightedness) and hypermetropia (far-sightedness) and understand why even a diet full of vegetables (Specially Carrrot) cannot correct these vision issues.

WHAT IS MYOPIA AND HYPERMETROPIA?

  • Myopia (Nearsightedness):
Myopia means you can see things near or close to you clearly but things far away look blurry. Usually anything beyond 25cm

  • Hypermetropia (Farsightedness):
Hypermetropia means you can see things distant objects or far away clearly but things close to you look blurry.

CAUSES OF THESE VISUAL CONDITIONS

1. Genetic Factors:

  • Myopia: It Often runs in families so that If your parents or siblings have myopia the likelihood of developing this condition in you is increased.

  • Hypermetropia: Also has some or very little a genetic component so it can also be inherited.

2. Structural Issues:

  • Myopia: One of the very common cause os this condition is by the eyeball being longer than normal lenght or the cornea having too much curvature that makes the light focus in front of the retina so that blurring of the distant objects occur

  • Hypermetropia: Its just the opposite of Myopia, resulting from the eyeball being shorter than normal or the cornea having too little curvature to converge the beam of light at the retina so that it causes light to focus behind the retina making close or near objects blurry.

3. Environmental Factors:

  • Prolonged Near Work: According to some latest researches, children who grew up in a closed environment, tends to develop this condition more than those who grew in an open environment like village. Also Activities like reading, using computers, and looking at mobile screens for extended periods can strain the muscles of the eyes and increase the risk of developing myopia.

  • Outdoor Activities: Spending less time outdoors and more time on indoor activities can also contribute to myopia progression.

Why Carrots Can't Cure Myopia? The Role of Carrots and Vegetables:

  • Vitamin A:

Carrots and many other vegetables are rich in Vitamin A which is an essential component for maintaining good vision and overall eye health. Vitamin A deficiency can lead often lead to night blindness and other eye issues which are completely different from refractory errors of the eye (Myopia and Hypermetropia). However, Vitamin A cannot cause the eyeball to get back its shape or length or correct the refractive errors like myopia or hypermetropia, which are purely caused by genetic and structural factors.

  • Nutritional Benefits:

While a healthy diet supports general eye health like many other organs of the body, but it cannot cure structural problems of the eye that must require wearing glasses or contact lenses for correction.

Effective Treatments for Myopia and Hypermetropia:

1. Glasses or Contact Lenses:

The most common and effective way, people use to correct myopia and hypermetropia are convex or concave lenses respectively

2. Laser Surgery (LASIK):

This new intervention, laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) can reshape the cornea to correct refractive errors but it is really not suitable for everyone and often comes with serious side effects.

Conclusion:

Carrots and vegetables are no doubt excellent for maintaining overall eye health and body homeostasis but they cannot cure or the treatment options for myopia or hypermetropia. These conditions are primarily caused by genetic and structural factors and the effective correction and treatment typically requires interventions like glasses, contact lenses or surgical Procedures. Always consult an eye specialist for proper diagnosis and treatment options for your eye health.

Key Takeaways for Non-Medical Readers:

  1. Diet and Eye Health: Eating carrots and other vegetables supports overall eye health but does not cure this vision problems like myopia and hypermetropia.

  2. Understanding Refractive Errors: Myopia and hypermetropia are caused by the change in the degree of curvature of the cornea or in the shape of the eye and cannot be fixed by diet alone.

  3. Effective Treatments: Glasses or contact lenses and in some cases a laser surgery might be necessary to correct these vision issues, called refractory errors of the eye

As I understand, scientist currently think of Vitamin A as a family of organic compounds.

One finds beta-carotene in carrots. This needs to be converted to retinol for use in the human body. Apparently, people who lack the enzymes to convert beta-carotene into retinol don't see much benefit in beta-carotene.

Apparently vitamin A can be toxic if taken in large doses. So, the role of vitamin A is complex.

We do it carrots a lot in these days...
good info doc.

I live in a village but i have myopia and i blame my bsc books, their font size could make anyone fully blind(as they tried to make me but fortunately half succeeded in that)

Secondly, i blame my screen time, i used to read fiction on mobile at night, it was the worst thing i did to myself.

The carrot myth is as old as this earth i believe. But my mother believes that black gram and almond can cure my eyesight and couple of remedies like these.

She is telling me to start eating them, if not carrots do these things cure it?

Lastly, i saw a video of an Indian telling Baba ramdev(yogi) that he cured his eyes sight with breathing exercises.

It's on my list to introduce in my life and is the most difficult one:(
