There aren't many Bolliwood films I've watched, but almost all of the ones I've finished watching have left a lasting impression, one of which is 2014's PK, which I've written about and posted here. The film brought together filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani and actor Aamir Khan. A very interesting film from many angles, in my opinion. This time I will write about a film that also pits Mr. Hirani against Mr. Khan. A film that was released 5 years before PK, titled 3 Idiots.

3 Idiots is a dramedy (drama comedy) set in the life of college education. Not just a comedy, this film also presents a deep message and criticism related to the world of education, so that in addition to entertaining with light comedy, it also invites thinking on many aspects related to education that have been considered normal but are actually something that has gone wrong. Not only about the world of education, this film contains the ups and downs of friendship, romance, and even offers thoughts on the meaning of life and further success, related to the world of education and what it offers.

It seems to be Hirani's speciality to present films that are more than just entertainment but also full of education. People who are interested in education and the twists and turns of college life will definitely find this film worth watching, and some of them might even “find themselves” in the film.

3 Idiots is a film adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's novel Five Point Someone, released in 2004, which chronicles the lives of engineering students in India and the pressures they face. The book, according to India Today in an article released on 8 September 2014, quotes Bhagat, “In the three years since its 2004 publication, the campus novel had sold a million books.”

The screenplay for the film was written by Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi. They developed relevant themes about the education system, innovation, and the importance of following your passion. With its light-hearted yet meaningful approach, 3 Idiots managed to capture global attention and became one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of all time.

The film 3 Idiots tells the story of three friends, Ranchhoddas "Rancho" Shamaldas Chanchad/Chote/Phunsukh Wangdu (Aamir Khan), Farhan Qureshi (R. Madhavan), and Raju Rastogi (Sharman Joshi), who meet as students at the Imperial College of Engineering, one of the best engineering colleges in India. Rancho is a genius student who thinks outside the box and often opposes the rigid, rote-based education system. Farhan, on the other hand, is more interested in photography but is forced to major in engineering to fulfil his father's wishes, while Raju comes from a poor family and lives under great academic pressure. I think these 3 main characters are enough to represent the things that are commonly found in the life of education, especially college.

The three are often at odds with Professor Viru Sahastrabuddhe aka Virus (Boman Irani), who has a strict approach to education and pressures students with high academic demands. Rancho teaches his friends to think creatively and enjoy learning, not just chasing grades and rankings. Meanwhile, Rancho is also in a romantic relationship with Pia (Kareena Kapoor), Virus' daughter (Haha!).

No matter how right you are, you don't argue with your elders and teachers. You bow your head even when they are wrong.

The film carries a special message among many others that viewers might realise, that success is not just about a degree and a high-paying job, but about pursuing your passion and making a real contribution to the world. With the philosophy of ‘All is well’, 3 Idiots inspires many people to redefine the meaning of success in life, and to not be anxious about life and take risks and determine their own happiness.

Upon its release, 3 Idiots immediately received an overwhelming response from both critics and audiences. The film set box office records and became the highest-grossing Bollywood film of its time, including huge success in international markets, such as China and the United States. 3 Idiots, in 2015, was even listed in the Guiness Book of World Records for the record of highest box office film gross for a Bollywood film (Source).

In terms of awards, 3 Idiots won many prestigious awards in the domestic film world, including Best Film at the Filmfare Awards, IIFA Awards, and Star Screen Awards. In addition, Rajkumar Hirani won Best Director at various awards, and Aamir Khan Best Actor at several film festivals.

On an international scale, 3 Idiots also found success outside India, winning several international film awards and becoming the first Indian film to gain huge popularity in China, where at the first Beijing International Film Festival in 2011 it was nominated for the Best Foreign Film prize. In Japan, 3 Idiots was nominated for the Best Outstanding Foreign Language Film at the 37th Japan Academy Awards in 2014.

boxofficemojo.com (accessed on 9 February UTC +7) lists 3 Idiots at number 92 as the highest grossing 2009 film worldwide, amounting to over USD 60 million (USD 6.5 million domestic + USD 53.7 million foreign).

Per February 9th, 3 Idiots ranked 92 in the list of 200 highest grossing movies of 2009 by boxofficemojo.com.

Overall, 3 Idiots, besides acting as a spectacle entertainment, also acts as a portrait of a cultural phenomenon that wants to - and perhaps to a certain extent, succeeds in - changing the way people think about education and success. With a strong story and inspiring message, I think this film will remain relevant to watch anytime and will leave a deep impression on many people who have and will watch it.

If you like light-hearted jokes, a bit of drama, and nothing less than an invitation to think, especially about life, especially college life (more broadly the world of education), I believe you will find 3 Idiots to be a film you will appreciate. And as I said above, you might even find yourself in the film.

Mantap kali pak reviewnya..lengkap banget

Saya mencoba memberi sebanyak mungkin info dalam tulisan yang berisi hanya sekitar 1000 kata, ya beginilah jadinya. Terimakasih. Apakah @ninaa04 sudah pernah menonton ini?

This looks like a movie I have to put on my to-watch-list :)
Ratings so high, especially Rotten Tomatoes, lately I trust their scores as somehow they match my own.
Moreover, we all need more positivism and light in those dark modern ages, don't we? :)

Thanks so much for everything you do; I wish you a great week ahead! :)

The movie 3 idiot is a movie you will love, It’s one of my favorite Indian movie. You will not get bored watching it.

I have watched it for more than once. Not many movies that make you want to re-watch them over and over. Please name me one movie you think I should watch at least once in my life. Thanks, @iamguchidanart.

Oh, that's totally true :)
I have a similar categorization for the places I travel to photograph. If I want to return with the camera, they are really something more than all the others I am good with a single visit ;)

I believe you do. =D

Thanks for your feedback and recommendation! :)

You welcome my friend it’s a movie you will end up watching twice 😂😂😂 have fun. 🙌🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾

This looks like a movie I have to put on my to-watch-list.

You won't regret taking the time to watch this film. As @iamguchidanart said, you will love it.

Ratings so high, especially Rotten ...

Yes. Ratings (especially based on user reviews) can indeed be relied upon to get an initial idea.

... we all need more positivism and light ...

Agreed.

I see you are a movie enjoyer just like me, what kind of movie do you like?

Thanks, @lightcaptured.

Oh, the Ratings are just one of the factors I consider when selecting a movie. Sometimes they don't reflect the user opinions correctly, especially when it comes about non-USA movies.

Generally, though, I would hesitate to watch a movie that has a score under 6.0 in IMDB :)

I think my taste changes with time and of course, mood. I loved to read SciFi books as a child and this genre is my favorite, I don't really like drama based on current events, as I have that too much already by the mainstream media, the news, you know... Mystery genre, I like as well. With life getting faster and faster, I watch less and less movies, but I watch more Series, it's easier to give 40-50 minutes instead of uninterrupted 3 hours or so, right ;)
Of course, Comedy, when I need some laughter :) Crime, sometimes, nowadays genres are mixed.

I love French cinema as well, I even learned French for two years because I wanted to be able to understand what the actors say instead of having to read the subtitles.

We have similar stance about movie ratings. And as I continue to read your comment, I feel we have in common more than just an attitude towards film ratings. Now, I am also more interested in watching series, but often I repeat old series, especially Friends (originally released on 22 September, 1994 - 6 May, 2004). I've finished this series for so many times I have lost count. I also love the series Ozark, Stranger Things, and Young Sheldon.

Source. Too bad Netflix has canceled the show, and according to the news it was the most expensive series the TV station has ever paid for.

I think my taste changes with time and of course, mood.

I think it's not just us, it's most likely all film lovers.

We like the same genres, as it turns out, in general.

I even learned French for two years because I wanted to be able to understand what the actors say instead of having to read the subtitles.

Ah! Great! How well have you progressed in the language? While me, these two memes quite enough to describe how I interact with foreign movies. 😅😅

Wow I saw the thumbnail of your post which is about 3 idiots and while exploring your post I just came to know that you have watched PK movie as well.

I have also watched both the movies several times but the problem is that I often forget the whole story of the movies 😂. Did you watched movies in Hindi or dubbed in your own language.

Btw you have made a beautiful profile picture with the inspiration of your liking of orange colour 🧡.

Both are great films. The stories, the cinematography, the songs, the dances, the jokes. What's not to love? 😃 And have you watched Bajrangi Bhaijaan? Maybe I will write about it too. And maybe you have any suggestion for me to watch? Thanks in advance.

I don't like dubbed movies, I would rather watch them in original languages and read the subtitle. 😂

Yes! That's me! Haha! Source.

... but the problem is that I often forget the whole story of the movies ...

Same here, that's why sometimes I watch them again. 😂

Hahaha 😂 you are so funny. Indeed I am not fond of watching movies and dramas but still I have watched Bajrangi Bhai Jaan as well and it is also a very interesting story based movie.

Thank you, but what did I do to get this, or was it random pick?
Thanks.

Thanks. Highly aprreciated. @adeljose.

Great reviews, 3 Idiots not only entertains but also provides food for thought on education system and deep philosophy of life. Every aspect of the movie has been brought out beautifully in your writing, especially the parts of the characters' backgrounds and criticism of the education system are very important. ❤️

Can you name me one film that I should watch at least once in my life? Thanks, @max-pro.

tc4-tfc.png

You watch Aamir Khan's movie "Dangal" (2016), it's a very inspiring movie.

image.png
SOurce.

In my to-watch list now. IMDB ratings = 8.3/10. As I read on the net it falls in the genre of sport and action. And an article on IDNTimes said it to be the highest grossing Indian film of all time, having earned a profit of 2,024 crore rupees or IDR 3.6 trillion (USD 220,149,720.00 USD 1 = IDR 16,352.50). Definitely a must-see.

Thanks.

I am sure you will enjoy watching it.

Thank you 🙂
