Malèna

Malèna is an erotic drama movie from the Italian movie industry released on 2000, written and directed by Giuseppe Tornatore from a story by Luciano Vincenzoni. The story was happening during the Second World War, a teenage boy gets smitten by Malena, a sensual woman living in a small town.

The leading character Malena was done by Monica Bellucci and the movie won many awards and got good critic's review.

There was an iconic scene in which the woman gets crowded just for lighting a cigar which meant a lot in the story. So I tried to recreate the scene with the watercolours 9n paper canvas.

Medium
Watercolour paints

Tools used
Artist grade watercolours
Brushes - Round 1,4,6
Paper - A5, 320gsm
Water
Pencil Hb
Masking tape

Extras
Abandoned the using of dry or wet colours on the wet surface to get rid of unwanted mixing up.

How I made the painting

Preparing the canvas
Fixed the paper on a plane board. I used masking tapes like before for this. Used an Hb pencil and did some basic sketches for easy painting.

Started painting with a very light contrast. First focused on the background.

Painting the character
After finishing the first layer which was mostly the background, I went to the main character space. Finished the painting of the face and spent more time there.

Detailing
Let the painting dry for a few minutes. Then moved to the detailing part. Used good contrasty sharp colours and a 1 point round brush to make some shadows.

Finishing
Completed the background removed the masking tapes from the edges with good care.
