Halloween is an event that is yet to be fully understood in most part of the world. For this reason, it is not recognized and practiced. The event has attracted so many opinions both on the positive and negative sides.
In my country, most people are not even aware of this event. Those who are aware also hold some positive or negative opinions about its practice. But for me, I choose not to argue on whatever opinion that they may have about the celebration of this event.
History records that about the 9th century, Christianity has cut across the Celtic regions where the event is been celebrated as an annual tradition. The Christian practice became combined with this Celtic traditional practice.
At about 1000 A.D, the church recognized November 2nd as the all souls day which is a day to honor their departed or dead ones.
In place of this Celtic celebration of the dead, the church has now made it to be a holiday in the Christian calendar.
The all souls day is now celebrated just like the samhain is done. It is celebrated with the use of wearing costumes and dress like the saints, devils or angels. Lighting up fires is also used to mark the event.
The saints day celebration is also called several names in English such as allholowmesse which means All Saints' Day, All-hallowmas or All-hallows. Afterwards, the traditional night practice of samhain the Celtic religion started to be known as All-hallows Eve and finally recognized as Halloween.
Thank you for your first post for the contest. It is interesting to learn that is it not really celebrated in Nigeria. I thought nowadays due to widespread communication and modernisation people might taken over that Holiday too because it is more fun, the fact of getting dressed into consumes, getting together and having decoration of houses and also for kids to have fun with costumes and sweets.
So I understand that you would not celebrate it, because the question was how you celebrate Halloween?
