Schanppy Schnapps! (Wild Brumby)

Ahhhhh... a long awaited package finally arrived today! As I'm now in a new country... it is my duty to seek out and support the local producers! And part of that journey is to seek out the best breweries and distilleries that are in the area, or at least, on the same continent! I've posted before about finding some really nice beers from craft breweries that are local... but today, I'm posting about a nice find of liqueurs. I'm quite partial to a small glass of something as a nightcap... much more than a beer or wine, there is something really quite nice about having a little glass of something very tasty and strong!

Anyway, whilst visiting a small boutique bottle shop that mostly specialised in wines, I did find a nice schnapps... well, I found a nice array of schnapps from the Wild Brumby distillery, however, given that I didn't know the brand or the liqueur, I decided that it would be prudent to just buy a single bottle. Of course, that meant that I had the tough decision of figuring out WHICH bottle would be the one to try out!

... and a good old tried and true flavour for Schnapps is always going to be the butterscotch version. So, I was incredibly un-adventurous, and walked out with that one... with the nagging feeling of wishing that I had got one of everything! Or at least, one of the more exciting sounding ones!

Wow... let me tell you, this has been such a great experience with this bottle! So smooth, and the flavour is not overwhelmingly sweet. This one hits the spot, and is perfect to drink neat... no ice, no addition of anything. Just pure flavour and alcohol! Needless to say, it didn't last too long either... I did use some for cooking stewed apples for the family... but I'm going to find a bottle of something else to use for that. I normally use Drambuie for that... but I didn't have any on hand (we are still building up our alcohol stock!)... but I don't want to be using this good stuff for mere cooking! On the other hand, Drambuie is more expensive....

So, now that I knew what I was after... I decided it would be better (and cheaper) to order direct from the distillery itself. Oh man... if I thought that looking at a rack of bottles and flavours was difficult... well, imagine having the entire selection from the producers!

I was tempted to get a pack of 5 or 6... but I'm sure that that would have gone down badly with my wife... plus, it didn't have the exact flavours that I wanted. In the end, I settled on the good old butterscotch, a seasonal baked apple, and the intriguing sounding Devil's Tongue.

Well... I have already talked about the butterscotch... and I'm sure that I won't be disappointing there!

The other two... well, the baked apple is a special seasonal treat. It only comes in a smaller bottle, and is only produced in the winter season. I haven't opened this one yet... I'm saving it for a special occasion... like when the others run out? No, I think I will crack it open this even to try out.

However, I did open the Devil's Tongue the other night... and it has a really nice spicy bite on it. I'm guessing that it is heavily chili flavoured, and it has that initial swift burn. It catches you off-guard the first time, but as you keep drinking... well, it gives a nice warmth to your mouth and insides! It is a bit of an acquired taste... my wife wasn't fond of it initially... but I'm hoping to turn her around!
