Today was one of "those days" where I got out of bed with a lot of energy this morning, and I felt like I was really going to get a lot done, today! I had a really good night's sleep, and my "weary bones" actually didn't feel all that weary... so I was in a good mood!
I was also in a good mood because — after a fairly long "drought" — I had sold several things on eBay overnight, meaning that we would be a-little-less-broke in a few days from now.
What Derails You?
As a long-time student of psychology and the human condition, one of the things that always interests me is the issue of what it takes to "throw us off course" in our daily doings.
Some people seem to be able to keep moving forward, even after a seemingly interminable series of setbacks, while others grind to a halt at the slightest signs of trouble. I tend to fall somewhere towards the lower end of the scale... whereas I am typically a hard worker, I tend to get discouraged easily.
This morning, my "discouragement" set in when there was a puddle of water on the floor next to our water heater. Our water heater is only a few years old, and long before getting to it's "maintenance years" so I had a sinking feeling. I mopped up all the water and looked for a leak... but didn't find one. Maybe we got lucky?
Sometimes the water mains pressure in our area fluctuates wildly, causing water appliances to "behave strangely" for short periods... we can but hope that was the case here, although it's still worrisome.
So then I took my luke-warm coffee back to my computer to start preparing shipments for the day.
Ouch! As I mentioned, I had several sales on eBay overnight... which was great! Alas, I sat down and found a "cancellation request" for the largest of those orders. Damn. $55.00 not happening, after all. Then I discovered we were all but out of packing tape because our daughter had used quite a bit to seal up some boxes, last time she was visiting... and of course had not bothered to tell anyone that she had used up the last spare roll from the packing supplies drawer.
Things Take Longer Than Expected
I have to admit that by this point a large part of my enthusiasm about having "a really productive day" had pretty much died down, and I was thinking more along the lines of an average day.
Now, I'm not sitting here writing this post because I am feeling sorry for myself, but because I was thinking about how some people would probably not have been affected in the slightest by these little setbacks.
I tend to have extremely high energy when things are going smoothly... and can probably handle more work than most people I know, even at my somewhat "mature" age. But it is life's little unexpected disturbances that tend to get in my way!
In the end, I'm not unhappy with the day... and I even have a little time left over to put together a blog post.
Thanks for reading, and have a great remainder of your week!

Setbacks throw a wrench in the best laid plans. I have a habit of being too ambitious about what I can conceivably complete in a single day. Losing focus due to a setback makes it worse because then I can't manage to get anything done. It is life.
