I suppose "Spring Cleaning" is likely a tradition in many parts of the world.
It's definitely something we used to do in Denmark when I was a kid, and it's something we seem to do every year, here in the USA, as well.
I've been going through some moving boxes from "way back when," and generally working on getting rid of things we don't really need, anymore.
In many cases, I end up pausing to wonder why something was even saved, in the first place. Maybe it's simply part of human nature to think that items "might be useful or needed, some day."
Some of the things I've been seeing today — and subsequently throwing away (mostly!) — were evidently worthy of saving when I was in my 30's, but now that I am in my early 60's... they just don't seem so important, anymore.
The interesting (and sad) thing about most of our old stuff is that we hold onto this idea that maybe our kids will be interested in hanging on to "family stuff," but the whole idea of saving things from generation to generation seems to be gradually "losing traction."
Our kids have relatively little interest in most of our stuff... and since it is very likely that we'll be moving to a smaller house in the next 5-6 years, we've decided to "unburden" ourselves of most of this stuff now, rather than dragging it around with us, anymore.
I think back to my own parents, and they mostly did the same thing... gave away (or sold) a lot of their less useful stuff while they were still alive.
We don't really have any "rare and valuable" treasures, but we do have quite a bit of stuff that's good enough that we can put it on eBay and get a few dollars for it... that can be put into savings for our retirement, if we ever get that far.
And even if we can'[t get anything for it, sending it to the second0hand store now, rather than weighing down the kids with that task seems like a "right thing" to do.
Besides, it's nice to see a little more room be cleared up in my office closet. Immediately after we moved into this house — bringing with us stuff from both Mrs. Denmarkguy's and my own parents' places — I had as many as 65-70 moving boxes sitting in that closet!
By now I am down to about half that many, and counting down!
The timing is actually quite good for doing this... the weather forecast for next week finally promises some spring weather and sunshine, after what has been the coldest spring in 80 years!
I'm really looking forward to getting in the garden and starting to get some things planted!
Thanks for stopping by, and have a wonderful Sunday!
