I had a recollection earlier today, that during the summer months it seemed like my parents were always pulling weeds in the garden.
And no matter how many weeds they pulled, it seemed like there were always new weeds sprouting and so they would go through another cycle of weeding. When I look at that sentence, it almost sounds like a weird recurring dream...
However...
Sometimes people go through that sudden realization that "I've become just like my parents" and I realized that earlier today when Mrs. Denmarkguy and I were outside in our own garden... and before we could do anything else in the yard, we spent about an hour pulling weeds from various flower beds and from the vegetable area.
In truth, I find weeding to actually be a very cathartic and peaceful pastime, almost like a meditation. But I did find myself giving a tip of the hat to my parents because at the time when I was a kid I thought it "weird" that they were always pulling these eternally sprouting nuisance plants out of the ground!
And Here We Are...
We've worked rather hard on our property to get everything to look neat and tidy, and we've managed to reclaim a lot of space that was basically overgrown with weeds and vines, and we have grown rather dedicated to keeping those spaces clean.
We also put a fair amount of effort into growing a large portion of our own fruits and vegetables, and that also means that the best yields come from soil where the good plants are not competing with the weeds!
I'm not sure whether it's simply part of the aging process that as you grow older you prefer things to look neat and tidy... as opposed to putting up with things that are so-so or not too great. I just know that these days I value our rather tidy garden, and I value the fact that we are turning more and more of the unkempt areas into something appealing.
When I was about 12 or maybe 13, I remember having a conversation with my father as part of which he was explaining about how it was his hope that he could just keep pulling up the weeds before they flowered and set seed... and eventually you'd get to a point where there were almost no weeds left in your beds.
All these years later, I suppose I aspire to something similar! Just like my parents...
However, we're a long way from being there. And, of course, we don't really have any control over the seeds that blow in from the neighbors property, nowhere the little birds decide to sit and poop out seeds that will become weeds next year!
Of course, there's nothing wrong with emulating our parents, as long as what we're copying is something positive!
And I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with wanting to keep a tidy garden. But it's still a point of amusement and recognition for me.
Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you have a great remainder of your week!
How about you? Do you find there are ways you :have become like your parents?" Are they good ways? Obsessive ways? Or do you not recognize the pattern, at all? Do leave a comment if you feel so inclined — share your experiences — be part of the conversation!
