Memories of Days Gone By: Falling Asleep in Class!

This afternoon I quite literally... fell asleep in front of the computer!

Let's back up for second... I did have a pretty good sized lunch, and I went to bed at 1:30am last night but got up at a normal hour. That's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it.

Anyway, there I was, looking out the window at the bunnies playing the sunshine on the lawn... and next thing I know, I was waking up. And it wasn't like I had just nodded off for a few seconds; I'd started a new YouTube music set no more than a couple of minutes earlier... and now I was almost a half hour into the set!

Asleep for almost half an hour. And it wasn't because I had "nothing to do," either.

"You're getting OLD, dude!"

I remember watching my grandmother doze off in her chair when I was little... one moment she was awake, and the next she'd be sawing logs.

Truth is, I've been predisposed to falling asleep at random moments for a very long time.

To the best of my knowledge, it started when I was in grade school, back in Denmark. Maybe I was in 3rd grade at the time... and I would just find my eyelids getting so heavy... and next thing I knew, the teacher would be calling out my name!

And it certainly wasn't due to lack of sleep, back then.

I remember a couple of times I fell asleep on the train and would end up going three of four stations past where I needed to get off. So I'd have to trudge across to the other side of the station and take the next train back. Fortunately, the tickets at the time were good for two hours — rather than a distance — so no harm was done, other than time lost.

I thought back on that and had the minor insight that I never thought of these sleeping episodes as "lost" time. I don't think that I have ever been "wound" tightly enough to worry about any downsides to falling asleep... other than maybe the embarrassment of waking up to a roomful of people laughing at me!

The ironic thing in this little tale/confession is that when I was an infant and toddler my mom could pretty much never get me to go to sleep for an afternoon nap.

Sleep seems to be my friend. Mrs. Denmarkguy — who occasionally struggles with insomnia — is always amazed by the way I'll climb into bed at night and be fast asleep within a minute or two.

Of course, none of all this is "wrong" in any way, or a "health hazard." Sometimes I speculate on the possibility that sleep was one of the "safe" things I had while growing up, so I trained myself to "seek refuge" in sleeping. Why knows? Sometimes the human experience can be quite a mystery!

Thanks for reading and have a great rest of your weekend!

Love it, my Mother in Law can make the house shake and Smudge disappears outside when she snores
