Reflection: Aging, and the Desire for Simplicity

It seems to be a fairly common thing that as people grow older, they start desiring a simpler life.

Maybe this is simply part of our natural progression through life: When we are young, there is so much we want to see, do and have... and as time moves along, we start to realize that we already have as much as we can handle... or possibly more than we can handle!

From time to time, I have talked about Mrs. Denmarkguy and my efforts to "downsize" and create a simpler lifestyle. I was working a bit more on that today, and realized how the clutter around us sometimes ends up feeling like clutter inside our heads, as well.

And we are really not that cluttered, either!

Nor are we really "old," but I am — at age 62 — gradually growing aware that I am not as strong and energetic as I once was...

Part of what made me think about this today was one of our (adult) kids wanting to know what I wanted for Christmas... and I really couldn't come up with much of anything.

We pretty much have everything we need, and the few things we actually could use are pretty practical and "boring." And we definitely don't need any more random "stuff" to put around the house!

In the end, I came up with things like "gardening gloves" and a new pair of sawhorses... nothing very "exciting" there. Sure, I could use a new computer... but I wouldn't expect anyone to spend that much money!

As I reflected a bit on the Christmas Present dilemma, I was slightly amused by the memory of my own parents in their senior years... and how (back then) it seemed slightly "odd" that they never seemed to want anything for Christmas, or for their birthdays.

Seems like we have turned a corner... and become more like our parents!

And maybe that's just a natural part of everyone's progression through life... our lifestyles and needs change, as we make our way through life.

Mostly what I really want for Christmas is good food, and the ability to keep paying our bills!

And I think this is where I am going to end, for this go around... we still have an arts and crafts show to prepare for, this weekend, so I don't have a whole lot of time on my hands for blogging.

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great remainder of your week!
