Saturday Celebration: Steemit 6th Anniversary!

I suddenly realized that January 29th marks the 6th Anniversary of my getting started here on Steemit! Happy Steemversary to me!

Funny thing is, I ended up here entirely by accident, rather than as a result of any kind of deliberate choice.

A friend of mine on Facebook and I were having some lengthy discussions about Universal Basic Income, and particularly as it might be applied as a blockchain based private initiative, as opposed to some kind of "government handout."

So he sent me links to various articles one day in a Facebook message, and asked what I thought about the three "programs" in the articles.

As it turned out, one of the three articles happened to be written by someone on Steemit!

I didn't actually think very much of the UBI program described, but I was slightly puzzled to find a seemingly active blogging site I had never heard of before. After all, I like to think of myself as a writer, so it's also part of my gig to try to stay informed about places to publish online.

So I spent a little time looking around, and was surprised at just how much respectful engagement I came across... as compared to Medium, Blogger and other venues I was part of. And certainly Facebook... yikes! Facebook had become a snake pit of disagreeableness!

Of course, I wanted to interact, so I discovered the convolutions of making an account on a blockchain based venue with a crypto token. Wow!

Yes, I was familiar with cryptocurrency already, but I didn't expect a social blogging site to be so complicated! In fact — once I got my keys and could actually log in — I didn't do anything at all besides just look around and try to learn how things worked for several days.

And even then, I was a bit nervous about it all.

To this day, I'd say one of the biggest hurdles for Steemit's growth remains the fact that it is "too complicated" for people whose expectations for ease-of-use amounts to "Log in with Google."

I'm glad to still be here, after six years... and it has definitely been a rollercoaster of ups and downs, including both 7 CENT Steem, as well as 7 DOLLAR Steem... and a lot in between.

I continue to take things one day — and one year — at a time, and will be grateful to still be here by next year, on this date!
