The World of Self-Employment: Mondays Don't Feel Like Mondays...

in hive-185836 •  3 years ago

It was Monday today.

For some people, that means feeling happy that you get to start a "new" week. For most people with jobs they have to go to, it typically brings anything from a sense of dread to just the sense of "MONDAY! I have to go to work — what a drag it is that I can't just stay home!"

After some 20+ years of working from home, one of the things I've become very aware of is that "Monday" doesn't really mean anything to me, anymore. It is "just a day" like any other day... there's work to be done; I get on with doing it.

As a book editor and high volume seller on eBay I just work when there's work in front of me... which is pretty much all the time. And yet? I am not really beholden to a schedule. Some days I'm up before sunrise, and others I make my way to the coffeemaker at 9:00am.

But that doesn't mean I get to be a slacker!

Conversely, weekends don't really mean anything, either — aside from the fact that many of our friends are off work and want to go do things, "because it's the weekend."

In a sense, weekends are often my busiest work times because I have a couple of businesses that need to be "on top of their game" during the times when people are not at work, but instead are at home and potentially have the time to surf the Internet for fun stuff, in a "shopping" sense.

For example, the peak time for my rare postage stamp and letter business tends to be between Saturday morning and Sunday dinnertime. My Sunday nights are often spent preparing orders so they can go out in Monday's mail.

This is just one of the ways in which being self-employed can somewhat remove a person from the "normal" cycle of life most others follow. Of course, that'll also depend on what kind of small business you have.

On reflection, I don't really miss having a regular schedule, nor do I miss that feeling of sadness and dread that goes with Monday mornings!

Thanks for stopping by, and I hope your Monday was a good one!

How about YOU? Do you "dread" Mondays? Or do you look forward to them? Alternately, do you work for yourself? And if you ARE self-employed, have you noticed that days of the week seem to have less meaning than they do to people who work "regular" jobs? Do leave a comment — share your experiences — be part of the conversation!

Allrighty @stef1, I'll put something together in the next couple of days!

That would definitely be a nice support for the community to have.

We can choose whatever 18 hours per day that we would like to work!

Yes, that's pretty much how it works, isn't it?

One of these days, someone is going to figure out how to add extra hours to the day and then we will be in big trouble!

Just wait until you're retired. You completely forget what day of the week it is. It's nice.

Well, I'm glad you're enjoying it! Alas, I doubt very much I will ever be able to retire... but it's a nice dream!

Haha I feel you I’ve never had a job Job or any kind of routine it’s an unusual life a lot of people have now had to experience with covid! Lol

I had regular job jobs when I was at University... and then I worked about two years in the IT industry in my mid-30's. Aside from that... it has always been a case of piecing together odds and ends to make it work, as best I can. Compared to my peers — University educated, about 60-ish — I suppose I'm a horrible underachiever and horribly undercompensated... LOL!
