True Friends Are the Ones Who Show Up on Moving Day!

What makes someone a friend? What makes someone a really good friend?

I imagine we all have our unique answers to that question...

Today, Mrs. Denmarkguy and I gave up a large part of our Easter Sunday to help our friends unload a 26-foot moving truck, after they had driven to California to empty out the last of their storage units there... where they used to live.

We didn't really think much of it, and were ready to show up and help in a heartbeat... but on the drive home we did end up talking about how often we've experienced so-called "friends" who were always ready to go out and do fun things, but when it came to thing like helping with a move... they were always "busy."

Or they would bring by pizza, at a point where most of the heavy lifting had long since been done.

As I said, it's likely we all have our own definitions of what a "friend" means.

Typically, I have had very few people in my life whom I'd consider true friends. Acquaintances? Sure, lots of those... but I would never count on them to do much of anything.

Mrs. Denmarkguy and I agreed that one really good measure of friendship is whether someone willing offers to help — and then shows up — when it is moving day.

The unloading job we did today — from the truck into a self storage space — was not a "lightweight," by any figment of anyone's imagination.

Our friend is a lifelong sailor and mariner, and he's also a builder of all sorts of things... so this load involved lots of heavy machine tools and bulky boating supplies. To top it all off, there were also two large marine engines... we're not talking outboard motors here, but 1000lb motors, designed to be built into pretty good sized boats.

Thankfully, they were already tied down on 4-wheeler dollies, and the moving truck had a high-capacity liftgate so they could be moved by two people... although it was a lot of effort! So was moving lengths of stud-link anchor chain that probably weighed about 20-25kg per meter!

It was hard to believe they loaded that truck by themselves in California... even if they did take a couple of days to do so. But we got it unloaded in an afternoon... and returned home good and tired from using a lot of muscles you don't normally use in either working out, or daily work around the house.

When the time comes for us to move again — and that will happen in about 5 years or so — I just hope we still have friend who will actually show up on moving day!

Thanks for reading, and have a great week ahead!

How about you? Do you willingly show up and help your friends on moving day? Do your friends show up, for YOU? Do leave a comment if you feel so inclined — share your experiences — be part of the conversation!
